Which SEC programs are destination programs and which are stepping stone programs?

Clearly destination programs: UGA, Bama, LSU, Florida
Unsure/To be determined: Tennessee (this is not a troll. Tennessee is fighting hard to get back into the destination program category. When Lane left it hurt Tennessee’s ego. But Heupel is doing what he can to get them back). Auburn (dumpster fire). Texas AM- here because of potential that has not yet been close to being met.
Stepping stone programs- Everyone else.

Kentucky is a stepping stone. I got no problem with that. But its a whole lot better stepping stone now than it was ten years ago. At the very least, Mark Stoops has made the hunt for the next head coach much, much easier. Give him credit for that.

Good perspective. Hard to find these days.

Stoops has been fantastic at Kentucky. Props to him individually and to your school and fanbase for keeping him. Makes this game much less comfortable every year.

Perfect fit for UK and he'd be silly to leave. Great fan base and plenty of support from the administration and alumni.

It’s situational.
If Matt Rhule, Sanders or the next biggest name in coaching decides on Auburn, then it is a destination.

Tennessee's kind of an interesting one. Like you said, Kiffin leaving sucked and lead to over a decade in the true wilderness.
That being said, he left for his "dream job" in USC. Oklahoma just had a coach bolt for USC, and anyone who considers OU (especially an OU that has been one of the three or four most dominant programs of the millennium) to be a stepping stone is out of their mind. Similarly, I don't think that Notre Dame is a stepping stone and LSU just stole Kelly with no problem. Sometimes, people leave good jobs.

Yea, sometimes coaches leave “destination” jobs to go to another program for reasons of their own choosing. Once a long time ago, Alabama lost a coach to ATM. He inherited a 3–8 team improved it to a 7–5 record in 2001 and a 10–3 record in 2002 and then left for ATM. Didn’t even come back to say goodbye after getting hired.

While I don’t think a Tennessee to Oklahoma comparison is fair when it comes to Lane and Lincoln, I do think Tennessee is on its way and has found its guy.
Not willing to call y’all a destination….yet
But I imagine you guys will be quite soon. Momentum and winning cures all.

Tenn is not a destination program. Zero high school talent in that state. Inconsistent and fat coaches

Tennessee and Auburn both can be. Tennessee has possibly dug itself out of the cellar, while AU has a lot more demons to exorcise.
I’m only hesitant on Tennessee because Hooker is a phenomenal talent, and I think we can all agree phenomenal QBs can cover up lots of coaching deficiencies.
See Chizik, Jimbo, Ed, etc.

Really dgaf how the heck anyone else views us. If we have a coach that to HIM is at HIS version of where he has always wanted to be, and he turns it around and has us consistently winning...that is all that matters to me.

Zero high school talent in that state
Getting it to stay is important I think they have some clout to keep it, now.

Continue repeating this lie is just cruelty at this point.

With what the SEC is becoming, the term "stepping stone" may no longer exist in this conference.

I mean if we’re being honest the only stepping stone program in the SEC is Vanderbilt. Maybe Kentucky because basketball will always be king there.
Coaches don’t and aren’t going to get poached from the rest of the jobs. They can get paid as much as anywhere else. The prestige level is as high as anywhere else if they’re successful.
I can’t speak for them all but Arkansas has never had a coach voluntarily leave for greener pastures. Holtz turned down Ohio State. Petrino turned down a few including Florida if I recall correctly. Nutt turned down becoming the highest paid coach in sports at Nebraska

I feel like State, Arky, and OM are in that shitty spot. We're better than a stepping stone, but not a destination.
I guess, that does, in fact, make us a stepping stone.
Truth hurts.
