He had pretty good offenses and the running game was his strength. That wasn't a problem.
It wasn't just alcoholism but he quit recruiting and took trips to Vegas which led Pittman to leave.
He had potential but he was lazy.

Bert severely underestimated the SEC and bragged that he had more success in the Big 10 than Saban.
He didn't take any responsibility at Arkansas and had the nerve to tell everyone that he will leave Arkansas better than he found it after he was fired.

Bert's biggest flaw is what doomed him. He was a drunk and needed to dry out before he could get better. Getting fired at Arkansas allowed him to do that.
Pittman's biggest flaw is that he wasn't a HC. To his credit he built a competitive team but he was dependent on his coordinators. When you select a high risk/high reward coordinator like Petrino you open yourself up to situations where the risk beats the rewards.
Pittman was a perfectly fine emergency hire until he overstayed his welcome. Bert would have been a solid hire if he had not developed a drinking problem.
Combined with disaster hires like poor John L. Smith and the disastrous Chad Morris you have a lost generation of Arkansas football.

Pittman wasn’t ready for the new college football as a head coach. He’s an old school guy. Had he been the coach 10 years earlier, he probably would have been pretty good

For what it's worth, Bilemma should've never left Wisconsin.
Took them to 2 or 3 straight Rose Bowls I believe.

If you will pardon a phrase that fits Arkansas at that time... Bert thought he was cutting a fat hog in the arse. You aren't just getting a loaded roster, you are getting a really loaded roster.
And he wasn't. John L. Smith wasn't either though the nervous breakdown made things even worse. For his great many skills Petrino had a nasty tendency, displayed at every school he was head coach, to recruit lopsided rosters that fell apart after a while.
In a way Bobby Petrino was a less folksy Lou Holtz. We remember the great seasons, we tend to forget the years he coasted on his laurels.
Bert did build a solid Arkansas team... and then his alcoholism destroyed all that. Bert needed to fail at Arkansas to develop into a more solid human being. I just wish it hadn't been us who had to pay the price for that.

I don't think Pittman is a bad coach by any stretch. He inherited the worst P5 program in the country and got them competitive again. Arkansas simply hasn't adjusted to the NIL era. He was losing his best players to other SEC schools cause they wouldn't pay up.

That alone should have bought him more time. 2017, he loses in OT to A&M and lost close games to State and Mizzou to finish the year. That’s a 7-5 2017 which should have been the expectations for Arkansas in this new world.
