I wonder if his time at Kansas is a reflection on an inability to adjust back to not having talent.
I think there are some coaches that are great at exploiting a talent advantage, but can’t scheme their way past a massive disadvantage. And then some coaches who are great at wrecking stuff even with a disadvantage, but can’t put it together on bigger stages.

In his best years his greatest attribute was getting his players t buy in and play hard to the end. Never cutting edge anything. Smash mouth, impose ur will beat that arse. It’s a lost art these days.

As a football coach, Les would make a good groundskeeper.

This is true.
I just think those two Bama games broke Les.

Good recruiter. Took smarter calculated risks earlier at LSU. Horrible awareness of clock and timeout management, and just how long it takes between plays with a running clock.

Here is how he compares against some other coaches.
Fulmer at Tennessee: 74% winning percentage, 1 national championship
Stallings at Alabama: 81% winning percentage, 1 national championship
Spurrier at Florida: 82% winning percentage, 1 national championship
Bowden at FSU: 76% winning percentage. 2 national championships
Meyer at Florida: 81% winning percentage, 2 national championships
Richt at Georgia: 74% winning percentage, 0 national championships
Miles at LSU: 77% winning percentage, 1 national championship
If not for Nick Saban, Miles would be viewed very differently.

Geez.
Did no one teach you about putting numbers in order?

He was good coach, just couldn't adjust with the latest trends. Felt like if he adjusted offensive perspective even a little bit, they would've been a contender eventually.

In 12 seasons at LSU, Miles played in 2 national championship games, winning one and losing one. I would say that qualifies as a contender.

He did lose an OoC game when they lost to Wisconsin.

It’s to LSU’s credit they play games like that to begin with. Lambeau Field against the Badgers isn’t your typical neutral site game.

In 2016, after 12 years. Nothing I said was incorrect. His only OOC regular season loss and it took a major player screw up to lose that one. A few weeks later, you fired the guy.

If Mal Moore doesn't get Nick Saban to come to Alabama, this guy wins 2 National Titles, maybe more. He's viewed very differently. He played old school, smash mouth offense with a great defense, and it worked for the most part.

LSU had some nasty defenses and weak QB play under Miles. LSU today is the opposite.

Really good coach for his era but the game changed and he couldn't change his philosophy to keep up

Nobody frustrated me more as an LSU fan than Les Miles.
Our teams were absurdly talented and always tough, but the man just refused to adapt to the modern game.
Saban ran circles around him because of his willingness to adapt to the modern offense. Les could never do it and it was his downfall.

If Les could have modernized the offense a bit and recruit a QB.
