What's the purpose of the SEC Basketball Tournament or any conference tournament?

Just curious... because AU won the SEC Championship before the tournament started, correct? Why just have a Championship game between the top West amd East teams like football.

I’ve wondered this myself. It’s really about what middle of the road team are we going to help make the tournament.

Simple...to give teams that are on the outside looking in a chance to make the NCAA tourney.

I doubt we ever go back to east and west divisions again.

Texas A&M is the only team still in it that can benefit from playing.

The same reason there is a "play in/first four" game

Without the SEC Tournament, we wouldn’t get to see Bama get bounced in their first game and shat on by LSU and Auburn fans, only for them to turn around and do the same thing the next day.

Well you and all the barn fans were having a GREAT time after the Bama loss.

Not so much after LSU and AU lost. Imagine that.

Both of you are ham sandwiches at a banquet.

The conference tourney is played for the rights to the conferences automatic qualifier into the NCAA tourney.

Regular season titles without a conference tourney title guarantees a NIT bid only.

The only conference who doesn't have a tourney is the Ivy League.

MONEY is the purpose of Conference Championships. Games, TV contracts and cash for the conference.

I always viewed it as helping to identify the team's who are hot now vs 3 months ago.

Conference championship =regular season
Tourney championship = best team at end of season

I kinda agree. Are they important? Not really except for those needing the boost to get in the big dance. Are they fun? Hell yes.

Winning the conference tournament is how the majority of the tourney is set.

Are they as big of a deal for the P5 conferences as the low majors, no, but March madness started with the low major tournaments last week.

Up until 1970s only 16 teams or so made playoffs. Half of those were dedicated, so it took something special to be selected.

At that time, the ACC was regarded as tops in basketball. They were the only conference to hold a tournament and it almost always worked out that they got two slots in the playoffs… reg season winner and tournament winner.

So…other conferences started doing it too. But shortly thereafter the NCAA started increasing number of slots so issue became moot. But…conferences were making extra money by playing extra games. So, here we are.

Tournaments have been passé for a long time… oh well.. not many people care one way or another.

Conference tournaments were for years largely just a tradition from the past.

How long have high schools held conference tournaments?

College sports used to be a lot like high school sports 80 years ago.

Conferences had tournaments, just like high schools.

The reason why college conference tournaments exist today is because of the HUGE amounts of money to be made off them.

Do you remember back when the Big 10 used to boast it did not do silly post-season conference basketball tournaments?

The Big 10 changed its mind due to $$$$.

Same reason why Big 10 has 14 member schools, not 10.

The purpose of EVERYTHING in major college athletics today is to make money.

And nothing else.
