Say what you want, but I never had a complaint the entire time he was the coach.

I’ll go with John Blake since that disaster lasted three seasons.

Smells of Bourbon was bad.. more in the way of a bad fit. I remember being there at his first game. Before the Blake horror show. Watched the procession down Lindsey st with Smells of Bourbon and his , ahem wife in red garish dress at the fore.. I knew it was not going to end well.

Still, had Smells of Bourbon not killed a kid the next summer in conditioning by restricting water... he would have been far better than BOO Blake.

Smells of Bourbon at least won half his games in the first year.. Boo Blake only notched a 33% win in three years.

We hired Boo Blake because he was black.. DEI sucked back then , it sucks now. All because OSU hired Simmons.. another black coach. Simmons had ability... he flamed out at Colorado, but that is besides the point. Boo Blake was just black..DEI.

In Boo Blakes second year he hired Dick Winder(from Taco Tech) as OC We had an offense, no D.... so what did Boo Blake do.. fired Winder, went back to the "Bone ' with a in house hire.

That was Boo Blakes last season, then we hired Bob Stoops and won a national championship in two years.

Oh, and Boo Blake.. an OU alum and player(offensive lineman) Burned the recruiting files as he left.

I'd say Boo Blake was, by far , the worse head coach hire at OU.

I sat in the stadium for most of that crap.

Chad Morris and Sly Croom are the two worst hires in SEC history. All of you are arguing for 3rd place right now.

John L Smith

Croom or Arnett for us. I’ll say Arnett because it was a knee jerk reaction hire with no AD. Croom at the time was done for reasons, program was in shambles and we were facing NCAA sanctions. Nobody would have succeeded at that time at State. Croom cleaned up the program and still had one decent 8 win season and set the foundation for Mullens success. He did leave Mullen some solid players

Has to be Sparky Woods. Brad scott is up there, as is Muschamp.

From a coordinator perspective, Mike Shula

I was 13-15 during the Blake years. I remember well. Tickets were cheap. The only highlight of those three years was defeating eventual Big XII champion Texas in 1996.

Someone mentioned Gary Gibbs earlier. He had to follow a legend. He went 44-23 and wasn’t that bad.

For Sooners I will pick Howard Snellenberger. Ran him off after 1 season.

Howard was an outstanding coach but it surprised me that okie hired him because his offense didn’t fit that program at all. Reminds me of when Nebraska hired Callahan, just a terrible fit.

I was late 30's for that period. Fun times...not our football program.v

The two worst coaching hires.. as to how the left the program... Boo Blake and TBOW. The worst was the last.. but at least he had a chance or two.

Venables has cleaned up rileys sabotage.

The difference between a blue blood like OU and the best sec teams... keeping a stable coach that has no desire to go anyplace else.

Most sec teams.. 'Bama included are a 8-4 season from hiring the next coach.
