2001 - Tennessee

Beating UT in Athens the year before was a big result, but the Vols weren't as good as they usually were in that era, so the win was emotionally satisfying, but wasn't indicative of anything in relation to where the UGA program was/wasn't heading.

Going into Knoxville, unranked and against a Top 10 opponent (who had owned us for a decade) with revenge on their mind, and grinding out a last minute victory was a form of proof that the Richt era was going to be different.

Three that come to mind are:

1977 OM vs Notre Dame. Game was in Jackson MS and Notre Dame went on to win the national championship that year. It was their only loss that season.

2008 OM vs Florida. Beat Tebow in the Swamp which they later went on to win the national championship as well. It was also their only loss.

2013 OM vs LSU. Game was in Oxford and LSU was top 10 at the time. I think they were ranked #6. We had no business winning that game with all the injuries we had on defense.

In my lifetime 2001 Auburn/UF. I remember the pregame that evening and though it wasn’t as classic as Lou Holtz saying he’d be the next Senator in Florida they were laughing at the odds of Auburn winning that night. Our defense played out of its mind and go some lucky breaks in part due to the awful weather.

Living vicariously through another team because your team can't do the job is what losers do. So this makes sense for you.

I'm sorry this angered you. I figured you good Bama fans were over it already with a new season getting started soon.

Not an Ole Miss fan but last year they came out fired up and beat Kent State 38-17. Pretty damn good! They have a chance this year and I think they will beat the mighty Memphis Tigers! Who are a BIG favorite! No mountain is too high for the Mississippi Landsahrks!

We had a couple when I was younger or before I was born obviously but the one that stands out is the 97 FSU game. They were considered unbeatable that year. We weren't one of Spurriers best teams that year either. Was an amazing game.

That was the game that showed the country that Spurrier will run the hell out of the ball if it is working and he wasn't married to throwing a gazillion times every game.

What kind of delusional logic is that? For 43 years while you were staying in the confines of the South Alabama was playing Southern Cal, UCLA, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Missouri, Penn State, Maryland, etc. at their place.

Well, bless y'all's hearts. So Alabubba traveled a bit outside the South....tell us....what was it like to finally leave your outhouse and experience civilization other than getting snookered in between the sheets with your relatives all day long every day?

I'm sure your grandiose stature in overalls with your two-toothed smiles just overwhelmed the seasoned natives in Southern California, Nebraska, Notre Dame, etc. I'm sure they thought they were experiencing Halloween a little early when they saw y'all.

quote:

Georgia is notorious for not leaving the southeast. Your future scheduling is something new so don’t act like you have been doing it forever. You haven’t.

You're wrong about that. Actually, Georgia traveled outside the South for a football game before Alabama did (UGA's quite a bit more cultured and cosmopolitan than Tuscalooser).

UGA first traveled outside the south to Annapolis, MD., in 1916, vs. Navy. Alabama didn't leave the South until 1922 vs. Pennsylvania.

UGA's opponents outside the south during regular season--not bowl games...(Texas and Virginia are southern and don't count---UGA's been to both Austin & Charlottesville)...

Harvard
Chicago
Yale (10 times up there)
USC (3 times out here)
Holy Cross (2 times up there)
Cincinnati
Temple
Oklahoma State (2 times there)
Boston College
Pennsylvania
Maryland
Michigan (2 times up there)
Arizona State
Colorado
Missouri (every other year since MO joined SEC)
Notre Dame

Additionally, UGA had a home & home series all set for Ohio State until OSU canceled the series. UGA also had home & home set up with Oregon until that was canceled. UGA was in negotiations with Penn State back in the 1990's; it had been approved by the then AD, but then coach Joe Paterno nixed the home & home.

UGA also had a home & home set up with UCLA for 1983 & '84....the '83 game in Athens was played (won by UGA 19-8), but UCLA canceled the contracted return game in Los Angeles for '84 and wasn't played.

The 1970's, '80's, and '90's are the only decades that didn't see UGA travel outside the South for a regular season game in its history.

From 1938 until 1971, ALABAMA never traveled outside the South for a regular season game except for one game in 1953 to Maryland. Bama also never traveled outside the South during the 1990's.

Back in the 1910's and 1920's, Yale was a national power.

Yale's also won 27 national titles....quite a ways ahead of the Roll Tide bunch.

Georgia went 43 years without a regular season game outside the South. That has to be some sort of record

There was a lot of woulda, coulda, shoulda in your post. Those games that were ‘scheduled’ didn’t happen. Might as well be make believe. Georgia is notorious for being coddled and not leaving their comfy confines. Looking at your history with one singular national championship I guess we know why. Congratulations on finally scheduling some home and homes. You are 50 years late to the party.

No, it has not been 43 years since Florida went to Syracuse in 1991. And it was not 43 years before that when they played at USC in 1983. And it was not 43 years before that when they went to Northwestern in 1965. And it was not 43 years before that when they played at UCLA in 1958. And it was not 43 years before that when they went to Tulsa in 1949. And it was not 43 years before that when they played at Boston College in 1939, and 1938, and at Temple in 1937.

I won't bother with before the SEC, but it was not 43 years before Temple in 1937 because they didn't have a damn football team 43 years before 1937. So your statement is totally false.

Opening game of the 1975 season. Unranked Mizzou knocks off #2 Alabama in Birmingham 20-7.

I can still remember watching that game...Arkansas wiped OU off the map in that one! Coulda, shoulda been worse maybe.

The Veer was a better offense back in those days than the Wishbone. More finesse and ball handling trickery involved than the power-running game of the Wishbone. Sometimes in the Veer, they'd run a dive play, the LB would miss an assignment, and the play would bust for a long run or TD. That happened quite a bit in that particular Bowl game.

Agree. The 2006 edition of UGA had no business whatsoever beating AU that day. In a way, that was the game that has turned the series in our favor.

However....My favorite UGA upset was the '83 Cotton Bowl win over Texas. We had no business winning that one, either. Texas handed us that game, and missed an assignment on an option play that allowed Lastinger...who could have been timed in the 40 with a sun-dial...to score a TD.
