We are judging Etling off of what we saw last year, very unimpressive. But what if Canada can raise the level of Etling's play? I honestly think that Etling will be at least marginally better than last season. Maybe the kid just isn't a pro-style QB. Maybe a spread will highlight the things that are good. It won't help his arm strength, but we may see improved accuracy.

Etling can't throw the ball into tight spaces or down the field. Canada may be able to squeeze enough out of him using motions and movement to win 10 or 11 games, but they aren't going to win 2 playoff games unless their young defense becomes 2011 Alabama or LSU or they can road grade their opponents.

On top of that, they are pretty bad at pass protection. It's not a good combination to beat really really good teams and do it consistently (which is what you have to do to win a national title in the playoff era).

Etling can't throw the ball into tight spaces or down the field. He can't throw it down field because of poor arm strength, but a good OC can improve accuracy with working with his QB and getting timing down.

Spreading the ball out and running more shotgun will work in protecting the QB as well.

Vandy.

Because their odds are the same as everybody else not named Alabama.

It's Auburn. I said that before they got Stidham.

Again, I'm not saying they can't be a really solid team, I just don't think they can go 11-1, win an SECCG and then beat two Top 4 teams.

And he stated that LSU had no one behind Guice. I pointed out that his statement is untrue. I'm not comparing it to the rest of the SEC.

a single player? like Auburn doesn't return 18 starters?

Yes, from an offense that scored all of 3 TDs in 4 games against ranked opponents. If Stidham doesn't right that course, AU shouldn't expect more than 8 wins again.

Outside of the Arkansas game, AU managed 22 points per game in conference play - that would have placed them behind Missouri for 11th place. Thankfully, that drubbing propped them up to 8th.

If you didn't have one of the best FG kickers in CFB, that offense would have been even worse.

Auburn - if Auburns new QB is as good as the hype Auburn could challenge Bama for the top spot .

UF - they have been the second best team in the SEC the last 2 years with only having a decent QB for 6 games . They have the best group of QBs in Mac tenure .

LSU - They still don't have a QB and lost a lot from years team . Maybe the new OC will turn the offense around .

UGA- they have Chubb returning and a young QB who has the potential to be special . If these 2 live up to expectations then UGA could have shot at winning the SEC .

Looking at the last 4 sr. qbs at LSU, the pnly one with NFL talent was the only one not to make it to the championship game.

I'm pretty sure no one was giving any credit toMauck or Flynn going into their senior seasons either. I agree with you that Etling could show enough improvement to at least keep defenseshonest and get Guice his yards. He doesn't have to be all American.

Making it out of the East for two years straight doesn't make UF the "2nd best team".

Arkansas is due to have a surprise year. If Austin Allen is as good as I think, the Hogs will be tough to beat. They have some good depth and several new guys that might emerge as solid SEC players.

Are there any coaches even on the team that were involved with any of those last 4?

You mean all of those coaches that have been ridiculed incessantly on this board?

No.

But then there were none left from the first for the last.

Etling is a smart kid and makes good decisions, but he has a rag arm. He struggles making NFL throws and to win a national title you better have that or have an abundance of elite skill to make up for it other places.

I just don't think LSUs young D and On-line are good enough to compensate for that in terms of winning a national title.

That isn't a slight. I've said 3 times LSU can have a really really good season, I just don't think they can win 3 straight against elite defenses and win a national title.

UGA will be fine on defense, but everyone is overlooking the fact that they had the 108th ranked scoring offense last season, they lost 3/5 o-lineman and their best playmaker (iMac). Michell and Chubb are legit no doubt but they were there last year too. And Chaney is still the one calling plays.

Also UGA is the clear favorite, and the favorite rarely wins the east lately
