What is a professional football player?

That seems to be the question.
From the time kids first put on a helmet, football is a filtering process. They begin in Pop Warner, the YMCA, or another youth league. From there, they move on to junior high, then high school, then college, and for the very few who are good enough, professional football.
That progression didn’t come from a rule book. It developed organically over generations and became ingrained in American football culture. Each level is something you advance to, and once you advance, you don’t go backward.
Do we allow a high school player who can’t make the JV team to go back and play for his junior high team? Of course not.
Why not?
Safety is one obvious reason, but there is something else that is nearly as important: the culture and integrity of the game. We understand instinctively that junior high football belongs to junior high players, high school football belongs to high school players, and college football belongs to college players.
We could fill books describing what football means to schools, towns, universities, families, and communities across this country. These distinctions matter because they are part of what gives each level of the game its identity.
So the question of what constitutes a professional football player cannot be answered simply by finding a loophole in a rule book. We, as a society, have spent generations defining what amateur, college, and professional football mean.
And now Lane Kiffin has decided that because he can exploit the technicalities separating those levels, those distinctions no longer matter.
In doing so, he isn’t merely challenging a rule.
He’s taking a dump on a culture that took generations to build.

Generations that haven't witnessed an A&M title in anything significant.

You are brain dead.
LSU wasn't the first school to try to sign these guys. LSU isn't the only school planning to roster some of these guys. You people are so dumb you just ignore everything else and put it at LSU's feet.
Harris just stated Ole Miss was the first school to reach to him. That kills the entire narrative but you all just ignore and keep on with the nonsense.

There's another thread with almost the exact same title in the top 10. Bet it has some answers.

Yall have got to stop with the hysterics. You think this is a Lane Kiffin problem? College players are earning millions of dollars per year to play football. How is that not a “professional” athlete??! “Also the commissioner of the SEC couldn’t even tell a court what a “professional” athlete is. Pathetic.

This transcends the eternal futility of A&M football, and you should know that!

It's obvious that this is what needs to be clearly defined.
IMO, I'd love to see the football rule define a professional as any kid who has signed an NFL contract. Give kids 5 years to play from the date they graduate high school (very regulated carve out for the Mormon missionaries), with zero redshirts. One transfer opportunity to any school they choose and after that, kids would have to sit a year to transfer again which would mean losing one of their 5 years to play.
For basketball, no kid that signs an NBA contract can come back. Let the Europeans play but cap the max age to play at 23 years old for any foreign nationals..... same 5 years to play rules as football.

Over half of the conference has CURRENT players that signed documents to participate in NFL camps this past year. Some of the posters on this board refuse to put the entire picture together because your brains can't handle it.
DURING the proceedings yesterday, two SEC schools added players to their football rosters that left college football in January to pursue NFL careers.
This is because the NCAA delayed its ruling about their eligibility until after college players had to make a decision. That is not the fault of any of these athletes. Blame the inept NCAA.
As much as your feeble minds don't want this to be true, this is not solely an LSU issue.

The whole point of my post.
How this plays out affects the culture of our country. Look at the structure of soccer in Europe, players are bought and sold as soon as they are identified as having talent. A sixteen year old can be given a waiver to play internationally.
Can you imagine little Boudreaux on Tuesday, getting ready for the big game for his hometown team in Crowley. Wednesday Rayne buys his contract and he's on the other sideline Friday night.
A line in the sand has to be drawn.

I think the NCAA wants this shite show so they can try to get legislation passed.

Maybe so.
The best interest of the sport has to be number one because of the importance of football to our culture. In the current political climate of our country I don't hold out much hope.
It is a perfect storm. If a little of the new had worn off Kiffin, LSU fans might be thinking about this more rationally and pushed back on causing a sea change to college football.

No they don’t. Let them work themselves into a nervous breakdown.
It’s only gonna get worse for them. We haven’t even played a game yet.

There is no Kennesaw Mountain Landis on the horizon, only sleazy lawyers, politicians and coaches playing their own angles. And the future of college football in the balance.

This is what you are completely missing. This isn't a Lane Kiffin issue. The media is just making it out to be. 100+ players are trying to get TRO's to play a 5th year. Pavia got a 6th year. Chambliss got a 6th year. The change was and is happening with or without Kiffin. The 2 players everybody is up in arms about have both said Ole Miss reached out to them. Harris has stated Ole Miss was option number one. He only reached out to LSU because Ole Miss wanted him to play OL instead of DT. But you all make this a Lane Kiffin issue. He didn't ask these players to go to court. They actually currently have a court order AGAINST LSU. Quit just hating LSU and actually look at the facts.
