The NFL has long operated under special legal treatment, including a limited antitrust exemption, that allows aspects of professional football to function differently from an ordinary business.
In college football, the gates were opened when players were allowed to be compensated beyond the traditional scholarship—a full ride toward a college degree. And yes, cheating and under-the-table payments have always existed. But there is a fundamental difference between people breaking the rules and changing the rules so that what was once considered cheating becomes part of the system.
The mistake, in my view, is assuming that college sports must conform to the same standards we apply to every other commercial enterprise in our society. College football was never just another business. Force it to become one, and we may eventually create something we no longer recognize as college football.
Lane Kiffin has become the walking embodiment of an old maxim: “Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.” Finding a loophole doesn’t make exploiting it right.
And perhaps the saddest part is that, other than LSU’s president, there appears to be virtually no pushback from the fan base. The people who inherited this tradition seem willing to watch it be dismantled, one piece at a time, as long as their team believes it might benefit.

Kiffin didn’t start it. These ineligible guys weren’t the first ones to join a team. Your hate is pointed in the wrong direction imo.

Maybe Lane Kiffin didn’t start the snowball rolling down the hill. But he may have just made it too big to ignore.
The forces changing college football were already in motion long before Kiffin came along. The money, the transfer portal, NIL, unrestricted player movement and the steady erosion of the line between college and professional football were already pushing the sport in this direction.
Kiffin didn’t create the problem. He simply followed its logic farther than most people were willing to go.
And maybe that is what college football needed. Maybe it took someone willing to exploit every advantage the new system allows—to demonstrate just how absurd the destination can become before everyone finally notices where the road is leading.
Maybe it took a Kiffin to do it.

Disagree. It’s on record multiple teams contacted said players. And many other players are currently on teams. It’s either no schools at fault or many schools.
