Yeah man, right in there with other big cities such as Columbia SC, Greensboro NC, Dayton OH, and Sarasota FL. Such sprawling metropolises

I would love to hear what some of y'all define as a big city

Only reb thats jumped in, what would be your thoughts hqad Ole Miss moved to Biloxi after the civil war? Good idea for Ole Miss? The state?
lol I’m from Raleigh and have lived there almost all of my life. I know this is going to blow your mind, but some people move away from home for college. Had a blast for four years in a college town that absolutely shames BR. Now, back to a real city.
ETA: To answer your question, I have no idea. Nonetheless, none of this changes the fact that no one considers the #70 MSA a big city. C’mon, please tell me y’all don’t actually think this

Thanks for that, lived in three different countries and 3 vastly different states, and actually went to HS all 4 years in MS. Ole Miss was the most heavily represented I guess small sample size, of the guys I graduated with that stayed instate so have/had great times up there.
But probably blow your mind, I still wanted to go back to my "home" school parents went and grew up attending games and rooting for. Still wouldnt have traded LSU for UConn, Marquette, Wisky, or any northeast cookie cutter get out of NYC feeder.
Been to Raleigh actually twice in the last two years, cool place, clean, safe, all that crap about raising kids, yeah BR is a shithole dont know what you meant by the real city comment. Small area that is very highly educated, growing rapidly because of tech and not for everybody.

I do not think that about #70 city whatsoever, the Lafayette children of the cane basically live in a small city (130,000 is small in this context of SEC and college towns in general ).
But they make a CSA the size of Rhode Island and then its a 650,000 medium sized city . A lot of friends from Crowley, New Iberia, Morgan City, they dont claim Lafayette whatsoever.
My entire point is Baton Rouge out of all the SEC college towns/cities screwed up by far the best possible mix of medium sized city, big time SEC school and geography. It really is something to watch. The politicians, LSU leadership, appointed by the politicians, and the local BR idiots, always do the impossible just when BR you think couldnt get any "worse" or LSU bludgeoned with the worst state constitution, they will surpirse you and do worse.

What makes College station better than Waco?

The fact that it’s an SEC town and not a big12-2 town.

Coast Trash Tiger clearly has a problem with Lafayette. All the trashing makes no sense. You act like it’s not a top 3 or 4 place to live in the state. Pretend the ragin peppers even exist then say this nonsense.

I've often thought of what South Carolina would be like if it were in a town like Charleston or if it were in a scenic small town like Camden, Newberry or Aiken. But at the end of the day, if someone can't have fun on a regular basis in a place like Baton Rouge, something's wrong with that person.

No I dont have a problem with Laffy at all, love the area and great group of guys mostly from New Iberia Catholic and Notre Dame in Crowley that have become my closest friends during my time at LSU. The area is definitely Top 3 or 4 to live in the state.
The question is if LSU wasnt in BR where I guess would be the best "fit" or would the university have the most success.
Lafayette is not in a great location if the university was in another "city", Lafayette of all has the least advantages for the flagship.
Had it been placed in one of the border cities, have more of a chance to get those out of state kids that qualify immediately on the other side or close to a border, same sized small cities relatively, but better than Laffy (None are good options).
Had it stayed in a tiny town in the red river area, even Alexandria, much like every other huge public land grant flagship the town would be the university and vice versa better option than Laffy.
Obviously New Orleans better than Laffy, but the entire state would suffer, definitely could see a lot of parents in Monroe/Shreveport areas thinking never sending their kids to school in NOLA just truth, state would suffer.
Farther the university would have moved farther from New Orleans, greater chance the New Orleans universities would have not de-emphasized or cut athletics (Tulane,Loyola) or a viable public university would have eventually become a relity, the largest concentration of people and wealth lie between the Northshore, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans. Without a doubt the law school would have always been in New Orleans or Baton Rouge.
Lastly its a great great thing, but Acadiana has its own identity, outside of New Orleans, having the flagship in place that the entire state can in some way identify with was the right call. The heavy heavy cajun french and all that would definitely have been less appealing to out of state students that have the money and is how the state can get ahead. Attracting an educated out of state workforce that only planned om going to college but some love it enough to stay for good. Not possible if all of the commercials would have sounded like well the cajun french.
So if it was in Lafayette, highest chance of having a split flagship, like an Ole Miss/State problem. Extremely lucky and fortunate now, our state is too small as it is with all the universities, imagine if there were two major public SEC caliber schools or Tulane had never left and built up the AD in the arms race. Its a lot easier for just a single major university to absorb the cuts every year in higher ed, if there were two major publics the cuts on the schools ever year would be much more damaging.
Edit: After working this summer for a state politician within cajun country, love it even more. The area definitely atleast this last session represents what makes Louisiana politics so unique, D and R can get mixed up pretty easily which is a good thing. 5 or 6 reps and about 3 senators basically from this area were able to bring the sides together.

LSU is not surrounded by a ghetto. Only the north side of campus borders the ghetto.
Also, I love Baton Rouge - although I'm worried about the direction it (and the state) are headed in over the next 50 years.

It seems that small college town vibe is a lot better than the big city state capital with a university vibe.
While that may be true, Baton Rouge is not a "big city". Hell, it's not even a small city, it's just a great big town filled with people who are afraid of cities.

Regardless of how you feel about the black poverty and crime on the north side of campus that everybody cites when taking shots at LSU , LSU has a remarkably beautiful campus. Between the oaks, the architecture and the lakes , it’s hard to beat.
