In 1941, Bear Bryant was an assistant coach at Vanderbilt, but after the season, he took the head coaching job at Arkansas. Unfortunately for the Razorbacks, Bryant never made it to Fayetteville.
As he was driving to Arkansas from Nashville on Dec. 7, 1941, he heard the news of Pearl Harbor on the radio. He immediately turned around and joined the Navy

We also had a chance at hiring Rich Rodriguez.
I thought that would be a homerun hire!

And Nutt still didn't win enough with that talent.

He still would have left for Bama since he was an alumni.

Hatfield was a safe hire. Jimmy would have won a few more games a year, leave for the cowboys and Arkansas gets slapped with major probation in the 90s.

I don't know how true it was, but the rumor was that Saban thoroughly hated the Dolphins gig, and made some overtures towards returning to LSU.
But LSU was then rolling under Miles, and the admin felt it would be too unprofessional to bump a guy who just went went 11-2 a couple years running.
Hindsight (knowing what Saban became at Bama) makes that sound laughably bad, but at the time, I could see it.

Shouldn't have run Stallings off in the first place. But I agree that Ross would've done well at Bama.

Steve Spurrier wanted the LSU job. Somehow LSU dropped the ball and he kicked our arse over and over again.
Young Spurrier was there waiting for an offer, but the idiots in the LSUAD picked DC Mike Archer. The rest is history.
Archer bombed out after a good start, then the "Dark Ages" decscended upon LSU with the hiring of Hudson Hallman. (Then Dinardo, before the arrival of Savior Nick from Michigan. State)

Yep, Bobby thought the Hotel meeting that night was the interview. He was then informed he would have to go to Tuscaloosa for a formal. He said, “I’ll Pass”.
He did the formal interview

May not be well known, but Dawn Staley wanted the Bama women's job before she wound up at USC. (I was working as an intern in the Bama AD at the time, around 2004)
The reason we didn't hire her apparently was because the AD and/or BOT back then didn't want to pay up for a big name WBB coach.
So they made the discount choice and chose the idiot middle tennessee coach that would drive the program straight into the abyss.

Nick Saban was a “done deal” lol
John Calipari, theoretically was possible, but that worked out best for all parties

LSU Softball had Patrick Murphy locked up for 3 days in 2011 before he decided to go back to Alabama.

Our many flirtations with Bob Stoops are pretty well known. The Shanahan interest was real as well.
On the basketball side, Bob Knight had accepted the UF job back in the 60’s but turned it down a day later.

The first part appears to be pretty true. Saban himself has said they (he and Terry) didn’t enjoy being a head coach in the NFL nearly as much as he did college.
The second part is clearly revisionist history made up by LSU fans in light of what’s happened over the last 15 years. Saban was with the Dolphins for 2 seasons. His first they went 9-7, finished second in the division, and barely missed the playoffs. Even if he’s feeling a tad unsatisfied he isn’t walking after a successful first season. Even if he decided in the 2006 season that he wanted out of the NFL, he isn’t going to call LSU and inquire about his old job. Miles had just completed a pair of 11-2 seasons with a division title and 2 New Year’s day bowl wins. Anyone with a brain knows that guy isn’t going anywhere. At the most he may have mentioned to friends that he wished he’d stayed at LSU.
