What coach did your school have a legitimate shot at hiring

but somehow dropped the ball

Alabama had a chance to hire Bobby Bowden in 1987 (He wanted the job, and would have taken it in a heartbeat.) He had told his assistants to pack up they were moving to T'Town. He interviewed for the job thinking it was just a formality, and was told they would think about it. He was so insulted that he dropped out, and Alabama hired Bill Curry.

Thank you Joab Thomas, you idiot

Not sure Bowden would have had the same success at Bama and probably would have stayed too long and you not get Saban.

Alabama was somehow able to turn Steve Spurrier and Rich Rod turning them down into Saban building the greatest college dynasty ever.

Talk about lucky strikes.

Yep, Bobby thought the Hotel meeting that night was the interview. He was then informed he would have to go to Tuscaloosa for a formal. He said, “I’ll Pass”.
Another interesting note on Bowden and an SEC School. LSU had made Bobby a firm offer to take over after Cholly Mac retired in 1979. He had told Ms Ann if they lose in Baton Rouge that coming Saturday, he would take the LSU job. He beat LSU in a late afternoon game for an undefeated regular season. Bobby with LSU resources and ability to recruit Florida and LA, well, would have been pretty damn formidable.

Bill Belichick but he said he didn’t want to dominate the SEC and didn’t like recruiting so we got Tuberville instead.

Steve Spurrier wanted the LSU job. Somehow LSU dropped the ball and he kicked our arse over and over again.

In 1941, Bear Bryant was an assistant coach at Vanderbilt, but after the season, he took the head coaching job at Arkansas. Unfortunately for the Razorbacks, Bryant never made it to Fayetteville.

As he was driving to Arkansas from Nashville on Dec. 7, 1941, he heard the news of Pearl Harbor on the radio. He immediately turned around and joined the Navy.

We had an agreement in place for Dennis Erickson to become our head coach in 2005 after we fired Cutcliffe. He said he just needed one day to talk it over with his family. He called Pete Boone (our dumbass AD at the time) to accept the job the next day, but Boone said Ole Miss was no longer interested. He was flying to LA to hire Ed fricking Orgeron

Pat Dye was signed and sealed to Georgia after the 1980 season, then Dooley decided to stay in Athens instead of going back to Auburn.

It's an unpopular opinion but I think Ole Miss could've been decent with O if they'd have given him more time but it was just a bad fit personality wise for all involved.

Same with him at USC.

Considering that it brought us into the 21st century in recruiting, I don't totally disagree. But Orgeron at Ole Miss was next level stupid

Spurrier

And off topic slightly but it's ashame we never got to see what Bo Rein would have done @ LSU.

IIRC Mississippi State had an opportunity to hire Spurrier while he was at Duke. That would irritate me

We had a good shot at Bob Stoops after Urban "retired" the first time in late 09.
