He is mostly correct. We aren't talking about southern states, we're talking about THE SOUTH.
Texas is most certainly not "The South". Neither is Florida. I'd throw kentucky in there though which he omitted.

John Bell Hood one the bravest generals in human history wore the gray and was from Kentucky. So was Jeff Davis. No State was unanimous in it’s decision

So who are the Yankee posters from ATM and UT that make fun of the south in their posts? You see it quite a bit when they get in arguments with other posters here.
Both schools are in that footprint of southern states.
Are they kids from Massachusetts, NY and PA that wanted to experience a school in Tx?

Eh, the Confederacy was over 150 years ago. Tired of the Mason-Dixon line being some kind of magical crossover into being "in the South."
There's Deep South - Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas
There's Atlantic - Coastal Virginia, North Carolina
There's Appalachia - West Virginia, Western Virginia, Kentucky
There's Southwest - Texas, Oklahoma
Then there's Florida and whatever the frick is going on there at any given moment.
Politics aside, I mostly think of the South in regards to the following things and why they break up:
Religion (not IF you have it, but what it meant to you growing up)
Food (Louisiana not withstanding, there's a specific kind of cuisine in the Deep South that varies from the other areas)
Geography (Mountains, Lakes, Rivers, Forests - what are you most likely to visit)
Music
Accent/Speech
And of course there's transitional areas... I live in VA, but in the valley area - we have little in common with the NoVA area, nor do we have much in common with the coastal areas. We have a bit more in common with West Virginia, but honestly not much there either.

Northern Florida (above Orlando) is definitely the South. Jacksonville is the capital of South Georgia.

West Virginia is pretty damn Southern, culturally, with their own hillbilly twist.

I've spent a lot of time in rural Mississippi, rural Alabama, and some time in Appalachia.
They've got some serious similarities in the culture. Slightly different accents, but to someone who didn't know better, they'd think it's identical.
I think the black population and influence on Mississippi is the biggest difference. And I don't mean that in a negative way, I mean the Blues, cuisine, literature, etc. Alabama sticks and West Virginia hills could be 1st cousins (and they'd probably frick if so).
Again, West Virginia is more Southern than that blue bubble in Austin, TX.

In my opinion literature shows the cultural differences the best.
Southern literature is rooted in race, religion, and the idea of a misfit/trauma. This is seen in works like To Kill a Mockingbird or As I Lay Dying. That is quite different from Texas Western literature, which is all about the untamed frontier, individualism, and physical environment. This is seen in Lonesome Dove and All the Pretty Horses.
Texas culture is all about the frontier and pushing forward. This was embodied in cattle drives and cowboy culture. Southern culture is about marinating in the same place, embracing tradition, and longing for the past life. This was embodied by planter culture.

Because that isn't their whole identity like it is West Virginia.
West Virginia doesn't have Cleveland, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Chicago, etc.
They don't have a city in the state with over 50,000 people in it. Hell the expanded MSA for Charleston, WV is like 200k.
