There was already talent in place, but the program needed a fresh voice. It had gone stale under Richt. Both parties needed a change of scenery.

Also, Sam Pittman's work on the offensive line was a big part of last season. Richt rarely had line play that good.

It’s both.

Very few Coaches win without all the right pieces and pieces rarely al fall into place all on their own.

Flaws in Smart's coaching, huh?
And I guess you're the coaching genius who can point them out to us?

You can banter all you want, but Kirby has done an outstanding job both on and off the field in his short tenure at UGA. And all indications are that he’s only going to get better.

Right I have said the exact same thing throughout this thread.

We can also pretend that the refs didn’t make the wrong call, which was clearly proven wrong on the replay, on the punt that UGA blocked that would have sealed the game. If that call had not been blown, not many would know who Tus was, and we would not be having this conversation.

But those calls were made and everybody knows about Tua because they won. UGA may or may not win a championship under Kirby but I'm not crowning them for coming close.

Both had their season ended by Bama. Kirby just got the benefit of JHS bama voodoo.

Had UGA beaten Bama that year, they would have waxed ND.

I heard from a UGA fan that they have already started a dynasty even though they haven't won anything since before the internet happened.

I also heard They will sign every recruit in the world even those from fictitious places like that world that Thor is from in the Avenger movies.

I heard their WR's would all start for the Dallas cowboys, and break all their franchise receiving records in half a season.

Was Georgia’s success last season great coaching or did they just have the right roster at the right time?

Goes hand in hand. A lil bit of that, a lil bit of this.

Richt won the SEC and finished the regular season #3 (BCS) in his second year. They would have made the playoff had it existed then

But would we have beaten Ohio State in the playoff? We will never know.

Not really when it comes to blue chips. There are 38 in -state per rivals and 30 of those are from metro Atlanta amd many are in Gwinnett Co and right on Athen's doorstep.

Yea call me crazy but coming close to winning does not equal winning. Honest question have you played any team sports?
A game of basketball maybe?

I can't believe it. I actually agree with one of your posts.

It's been said before, getting to the top is one thing, but staying there is another. Kirby not only has to win, but he has to learn to manage complacency and entitlement. Plus, like you said, his program is going to reveal it's true nature in year four and five.

We know UGA will be talented, so it will all be up to Kirby. We will see.

I can just about guarantee that I’ve played far more sports than you have. And for far longer.

With this staff, I don't have any worries about managing expectations or complacency.

The challenge will be how Kirby replaces coordinators or Pittman. That is the challenge for every successful head coach and only Saban has been successful managing that in my lifetime.

I don't want to make this into a discussion it's not, but in this generation, with this type of entitlement, every staff has to battle expectations and complacency. Assuming that Kirby will handle it just like Saban is highly assumptive. We'll see.

Saban has handled the coordinator changes because it's his defense AND his offense. Every coordinator Saban hires says the same thing, "it's not going to be much different because it's Coach Saban's offense". Saban's coordinators throw in wrinkles and whatnot but it's all a part of his offensive scheme and strategy.

In my opinion, both are responsible for last year. Richt could get good recruits in Michel, Chubb, Smith and Wynn. What Richt and staff couldn't do is coach them up to play above their potential. Kirby has them battling and fighting everyday in practice to be a starter. Iron sharpens iron was a motto for practice. Richt had them at the University and Smart lit the fires that elevated their talent to get them to where UGA needed to be.

Coaching for sure, Richt had the "right roster" many times but couldn't get over the hump.

Exactly. I don't understand why people say "Kirby won with Richt's kids". Well if that's the case, how come Richt never won with Richt's kids? Not to mention the fact that Smart is recruiting at a much higher rate than Richt.
