Underrated game in Alabama football history 1999 in the swamp

Given the state of the program at the time and feelings around it, there have been very few wins including championship games that were more exciting and lets be honest (suprising) as the result in the swamp that day. Bama 40 Gators 39 "this kick is.....GOOOOOD and alabama has snapped the longest active winning streak in the sec at 30 in a row"!!!!! Announcer: " shaun alexander will coach dubose remain the rest of the year?"....Alexander.." WHY NOT??? We gonna be the best in the SEC!!! GOD WILLIN" roll tide just a great football game

That can’t be right, was it? I know UT beat them in 1998. Surely the gators had not won 30 straight games at that point.

Thankfully, UF was offside on the first attempt extra point attempt in OT. Chris Kemp was the beginning of my trust issues with Alabama kickers.
That season was a roller coaster. Lose to La Tech, break the home winning streak at the swamp, hyped ourselves up only to lose to UT, escape LSU on a goal line stand, beat UF again, and losing to Tom Brady in the Orange Bowl. Everything was pointing to a National Championship run in 2000, right?
That stupid SOB clapping on the sideline still kinda pisses me off 25 years later.

Nah I remember it distinctly. That home winning streak was bookended by a loss to AU in 94 and that Bama win.

Beating a Spurrier team twice to win the conference in the 90s was unheard of. Are you listening, Tennessee? But BAMA had Shaun Alexander and still a very underrated BAMA QB in Andrew Zow.

That was the game that really cemented my college football fandom. I had been a Bama fan since birth and I paid attention to the games and seasons before, but my true love affair with the sport itself began with that game.

I very clearly remember that game; I was 14 so smack dab in the middle of full on, unbridled, all-in obsession with the sport at that point.
I remember when they met again in the SECCG I would've bet any amount of money that UF would have waxed the floor with them. I mean there's no way spurrier would lose to this team again at a neutral site. Them getting absolutely plowed was one of the biggest "what in the frick happened?" shockers that I was exposed to in my fandom at that point.

DAMN YOU SHAUN ALEXANDER!

Then y'all clobbered us in the SECCG a month later.

Gotcha. I remember that game. I was sitting in a restaurant in Knoxville before the Auburn @ Tennessee game and we were watching it on the TV. I was in high school at the time.

Drove my 5 day old Honda S2000 to this game. Got rearended by a gator fan that wasn't supposed to be in Gainesville. Could hardly enjoy the game from being so pissed off about the car. Called the dudes house 3 days later to make sure he had taken care of the insurance and his wife had no idea he had been to the game. I got my car fixed without any issues because she took care of everything.

If our punt returner doesn't muff the punt late in the game or let's it go into the end zone for a touchback, the Gators run out the clock to win the game. Dubose would have been fired and Alabama would have hired someone besides Franchione. Who knows what would have happened later. Anyhoo....

That's the game that really surprised me. I assumed that Bama had just caught Spurrier off guard the first time. I was expecting some payback.

Well if bama played Florida during the regular season more than once a decade then you might have more of these

Alexander's performance was unforgettable. He was simply unstoppable when it mattered late in the game, rushing 28 times for 106 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also had 4 receptions for 94 yards and 1 additional touchdown.

I remember watching in my apartment at 12th St and 8th Ave in Tuscaloosa. All college housing around me. When the kick went through I ran into the street in such glee and there were hundreds pouring out into the streets from all directions.
