quote:GA Tech has natural rivalries with several SEC schools, and would absolutely help the B1G - might even help them grab Notre Dame - I could see the B1G taking Stanford, GA Tech, Boston College, Cal, Pitt and Notre Dame to get to 24 if we take the 8 mentioned earlier ITT
True. The ACC already added Pitt and Syracuse for their "markets". Didn't help.
I’d rather have GA Tech than Duke or Miami, but whatever

think the biggest thing is the academics. tech and nc state are not bad academic schools at all (both top 75) but uva and unc are top 5 public universities and AAU members. doubt the big ten invites tech and state and i think one of uva and unc end up there if not both. can't keep em together

UNC and UVA can both get lost
VT and NC State
VT and NC State

UNC, NC State, Va Tech, UVA ... the SEC could live with that within reason.
FSU and Clemson will never be members of the SEC.
FSU and Clemson will never be members of the SEC.

Who does ESPN want?
What ESPN wants is for the ACC to stay together so they don't have to pay an arse lode more money to the SEC when the conference deal is up again.

If Texas couldn't do it, these poor ACC schools have zero shot

The same thing was said about OU and OSU, as well as Oregon/Oregon ST and Wash/Wash St.
This is what NC General Assembly leaders said:
"I really think Carolina and State ought to be in the same conference," said House Speaker Tim Moore, R-Cleveland. "I really think they ought to do that. And I think you’d have a lot of resistance to seeing them split off in different conferences."
Said Senate leader Phil Berger, R-Rockingham: "There is something about the rivalries that exist that i think would be damaged if we have the larger schools within North Carolina in different conferences. I would not like to see that happen. Whether or not that’s something that would be appropriate for the legislature to step in or not, I have not really thought about it that way.”

quote:It would be up to ESPN and I doubt they would take more than 4 of those teams as of now and in a couple of seasons, may not be able to afford only 1 of those schools. SEC expansion depends on ESPN's finances.
I'm wondering if a group of 8 have the votes to leave the ACC and all are set to join the SEC. A group of:
(1) Miami
(2) FSU
(3) Clemson
(4) UNC
(5) Duke
(6) NC State
(7) VT
(8) UVA
Would get the SEC to 24 teams and completely block the Big 10 from being able to get into the southern market.
ETA: Money wise, the ACC falls so ESPN is off the hook there. They roll that money into a new SEC contract with that money going to those 8 former ACC schools. They come in as partial members at $50 mil a year and get full membership next media deal.
ESPN gets better content for the exact same amount of money they are currently spending

ESPN may be willing to pay the SEC more and stop having to pay to subsidize the other half of the ACC to get the Southern schools that actually bring in eyeballs. Depends on the math but highly likely SEC and ESPN win that outcome.

(7) VT - SEC either or with UVA
(8) UVA - SEC/B10 either or with VT
If the Big 12 wants to keep West Virginia they need to pluke some programs from that side of the country to help them out.

Sounds like SwimSwam scooped everyone a year early, when they tweeted(Xed) that Clemson, FSU, UNC, and UVA were looking to join the SEC and ESPN was looking to void the contract.
They were ridiculed after posting that, but now it doesn't seem so crazy.

I can sense your fear from here ! A&M didn't want Texas ,either. That's OK, I understand. 100+ years of losing to us has left a mark. It hurts, I guess.
nah its not that. WE want to keep you on the schedule..but we also don't want to see you reap the benefits of the SEC.
you had your chance to jump away from the ACC with us. You didnt, so we hope you fail.
as for UNC, trust me yall don't want those folks. They are Texas of the ACC

The yearly UK-UNC basketball rivalry would be fun.

It's a math problem though.
Each new team added to the SEC needs to add about 60-65 million dollars of TV revenue per year to "pay for themselves". Otherwise teams already in the SEC will get paid less.
Right now ESPN pays 240 million dollars a year for the ACC games. That basically means if the ACC were to take 4 teams, they'd have to pay the SEC the entire amount they pay for the ACC to cover them being added... and they lose a bunch of games to broadcast in the equation.
The math doesn't work.
