Tyler Buchner has had quite an interesting journey in collegiate sports. After initially playing football for Notre Dame and Alabama, Buchner transferred back to the Fighting Irish to play lacrosse this spring and won a national championship.Following his victory, Notre Dame posted a letter dedicated from Tyler Buchner on their website, where the 21-year-old recalled his time under Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide.
quote:
"I got the green light to start in the third game of the season and had the best week of practice of my career leading up to it."Unfortunately, I played poorly and was benched for the first time in my life by Coach Saban on ESPN. I was devastated and fell in to a deep emotional hole. What I had been working on so hard for all these years felt like a pipe dream."
quote:
"As a 20-year-old, the ache of leaving behind the Fighting Irish was overshadowed by the pull of the transfer portal and the promise of playing for one season for Coach Saban as the next logical step towards playing in the NFL."
quote:
"You see, I had been lured to Alabama by opportunities that glistened like gold in the Southern sun", Buchner wrote.
Buchner now intends to walk on at Notre Dame as a wide receiver.

Tommy Rees sold him a bill of goods. Told him he would be a starter, but he was the third best QB on the roster.

And?
Maybe he's a better man now after going through that experience.

Watching him play put me in a ‘deep, emotional hole’. So we are even.

Being a Notre Dame level player and being an elite SEC player are a million miles apart.
He thought he was prime Elvis and he was actually Vanilla Ice.

That poor baby, would he like a participation trophy? How could somebody be so mean to him?

So life can be hard and put you in a ‘deep, emotional hole’ when things don’t go exactly to plan. Wow, welcome to planet Earth Tyler

Are we supposed to feel bad for the guy?
Doesn’t sound like he was sold a false bill of good or anything. He got the chance to start, played poorly, and got benched because of it. He had his shot.
Transfer portal gives and takes. Its not all rainbows and unicorns on the other side.

If football and lacrosse don't work out, I think he has some real promise as a poet

I highly doubt it. I’m sure we had some receivers and DBs that played QB in high school that were also better.
Granted it was played in a monsoon, but the only Bama QB he compared to from what I saw with my eyes was Brandon Avalos. Just an absolute wet noodle for an arm. I think it benefitted Milroe a lot to get benched, but my goodness Buchner was bad. Tommy Rees undoubtedly went to bat for him but I was shocked he saw the field. Dude must have been a stud in practice.

What in the wide world of Wright Thompson is this load of bullshite?
He was given the starting job against a shitty out of conference opponent and he had arguably the worst performance by any Alabama QB in my lifetime. If you had told me he was picked out of the stands before the game, I would’ve believed you.

He also said Saban personally thanked him for playing on the practice squad and helping them beat LSU.
The more you know.

It turned him into an LSU fan?

It was time for Saban to go for many reasons. His time had past. He was lucky he ended his career in the playoffs.
