Diehard sports fans still watched. But if you want to attract the casuals, you need the pageantry, the get-togethers, the bells and whistles, etc, and certainly a competitive game if it's gonna be on a Monday night, which of course none of the above was on display.

But for a bunch of moaners to come on a forum full of rabid CFB fans and suggest it's meaningless, well, it's either a well-organized troll, or denial at the highest level.

Did anyone really think this game was going to do massive numbers when sports have been way down during the pandemic and the Capitol had been attacked just days before?

People really aren't into frivolities right now.

Same teams in it every year will do that. People are bored with it. The CFP broke college ball. All the talent goes to the 5-7 schools that have a chance at one of the 4 slots and the gap between those schools and the rest of the P5 is as big as the gap between P5 and G5.

CFB is a regional pastime. I suspect COVID season has as much to do with the game not being as interesting to people as last years game was but CFB did everything it could to get a BIG 10 team in the playoff along with ND in an attempt to attract audiences in the midwest (big 10) and a national audience with ND. Anyone who watched CFB this year and is honest knew that 3 teams in the SEC not named Bama and Oklahoma was as good as Clemson and would have beaten Ohio State 7 of 10 times if plated on a neutral field.

Last seasons CFCG was the most watched ever because a team not named Clemson, Alabama or Ohio State was in it. Between entire swaths of the US not having any interest whatsoever in CFB and the same teams being at the top with an outsider breaking in like LSU last year only rarely CFB has become a regional game and is quickly losing the luster it had just a short time ago.

Of the 3 teams at the top mentioned above Ohio State has no business in the top....they play no one all season, as does Oklahoma, and gets wacked in the playoffs, normally the first round. Clemson is there because of their proximity to the wealth of recruiting in Georgia and Florida and close enough to the SEC to make inroads into Louisiana, also a recruiting hotbed. They also play no one all season and have been able to win a couple of natty's by being good and not having been beaten up by a brutal schedule.

The only widespread interest in the US for CFB is in the SE and no one can compete with Alabama, making even the fanaticism in the SE less than it would be otherwise. I dont think there is anything that can be done....

Who would care about a 6-0 OSU that doesn’t deserve to be there? Bama fans prolly said the same thing? Yep. vvvvvvv

quote:

Safe bet that if Ohio State had played Alabama, they'd be 5-1. So significantly worse off than A&M. I agree they don't deserve to be in, but as a Bama fan, I didn't want to hear the "if Ohio St was in the playoff" BS. Will the committee EVER be able to keep a team out due to a weak schedule again? I can confidently say OSU just made it with the weakest schedule that will ever make it. The Committee members that voted for them should be fired. On this we agree. Who have they played? The Buckeyes are going to get into the playoffs based ENTIRELY on preseason hype and not résumé. "It's almost like you've got to have 120 hours to get a business degree and yet these people over here only need 60 hours to get a business degree." yes, one of the most talented teams. Possibly not the most deserving based on the next couple of weeks and who is left standing. Dabo is right. The chicken shite BiG chose not to play the same as other conferences so piss on them. Dabo is 100% on point. Not only will they have only played 5 games, but their schedule is arguably the worst in the entire country for a P5 team. Put in Cincy over them, hell if UF or A&M weren’t up there I’d put in Iowa St over them if they beat OU again. I really think you have to earn your way in and Ohio st has not done that. With that said bring it on, let them get their arse kicked like every other big ten team has. This year the non power fives have a legitimate complaint because the pussies in the big ten didn’t want to play. It’s a shame they take a spot from another team that has earned it on the field. Let OSU stay home and celebrate their win over Perennial powerhouse Northwestern

Looks more like ratings driven by college basketball. Considering the season was cut short ...ouch.

They’ll never move it to a Saturday night due to the NFL playoffs, but it’s a shame we can’t have a “Super Bowl Sunday” type of deal for college. A day that’s a real build up to the game.

Thanks for sharing. That’s pretty wild that with the unprecedented distractions we have right now (political, societal, public health, etc) that more people still tuned in than they did in 2004. Truly a testament to this country’s love for Alabama and this historic run.

AS a Bam I could care less how many watched and what others think.

Print the damn shirts.

Ratings were down because of the OSU team.

If not on Saturday, then move the first round to December, and have the final on New Years night. With the bowl games in the afternoon, the whole day would be a buildup to the championship.

2020 season was about having fun, no one took it seriously. Kudos to Alabama for having the most fun this year!

This thread reiks of insecurity about your football program and your anger towards all things Bama related. The link below is a gem from AU's 247 site sums up the fan base's insecurity and MASSIVE chip on their collective shoulders. Mind you this is the same fan base that tells you that 18-22 year old football does not matter in their lives.
