Of whom there are clearly many, could you explain the appeal? I swear I'm not trying to be condescending, but I've never "gotten" baseball. I mean, I understand the rules, I've seen many of the "exciting" things, but outside of some outfielder running full sprint halfway across the field to dive and catch a ball or literally jumping over the wall to steal a homerun, I've never been into the actual mechanics and playing of the sport. I just want to know what's up, is it cultural, akin to soccer everywhere else? Is because most of our teams are good at it? I genuinely would like to know because, and again, I'm not trying to start a fight, I truly find it extremely boring do to the lack of what I would consider action.

Some context would help.

What are you talking about?

It’s the most elemental game there is that brings out the primal nature in all of us.

Man with stick versus man with rock. The story of our history

Has a nice pace and you will eventually see a play/situation that you never had and likely not see again...plus no dimensions are alike

If you played baseball growing up you would understand. I loved playing football and basketball, but baseball was what I really looked forward to.

There is something romantic about baseball. You don't have to be the biggest or fastest team to be successful, practice and team chemistry truly make a difference, traveling all over and spending so much time with your teammates creates a bond different than other sports, imo.

I certainly understand how baseball can be boring to watch for some people but I thoroughly enjoy watching great defense, timely hitting, etc.

Baseball was my sport. I do agree that it can be boring at times, but it’s truly a game of inches, and I watch just waiting for the next special moment to happen.. sometimes it is my team and sometimes it is the other team..

I just love the game, all of the little things that go into it, the mental side, the physical side, the managerial side.. It’s truly like a chess match with a stick and a ball. I don’t think anybody that doesn’t really follow the game would understand that.

Every single pitch involves a player coach or the pitcher trying to outsmart the hitter. At the same time, the hitter is trying to guess the pitch that is coming.. sometimes you throw it a little bit slower, sometimes you throw it from a different arm angle, sometimes you throw a ball setting up the next pitch which is going to look exactly the same, but do something different on the backside.

These are just a few examples, but there it’s just so much going on at all times. It’s also a game of statistics and that can be really fun to track.

At the end of the day, I just love the game.

Golf and soccer. If you've never played, boring as hell. You can't really get into a sport like those on TV unless you know how hard it is.

Baseball does not satisfy the modern culture's need for recklessness, chaos, and immediate gratification.

It's too sober, too structured, and too Americana.

I love it.

The loveliness of baseball is the simplicity. It's the only sport people from previous generations could compete. Ronnie lott would either get kicked out of every game or be rendered useless if he tried to adapt. Dick bucks wouldn't start. There is something said about a wood bat, leather glove and a generally normal strike zone. Can more players throw fast now? Sure but Greg Maddox killed people with high 80s/low 90s stuff and would still kill today.

You don't like baseball, I get that.

You also don't know how to use this word in context.

The problem with baseball is they burn it out at the MLB level. 162 games. Each game means DICK.

If Football played 162 games you'd hate it worse - because Baseball is clearly the superior game. But it bombards you with meaningless product.

No matter how excellent something is - too much is no good.

If Baseball played 2 games per week instead SIX - it would be the talk of the water cooler.

It's a great game at every level except professional - where it bludgeons you into ambivalence.

There’s nothing better than a good pitchers dual, which to somebody who doesn’t follow it, would think it’s totally boring.

Rather than try to explain to you why I believe that baseball is the greatest sport ever, I’ll just say, it ain’t for everybody. I don’t think there is anything wrong with not liking it.

No.

I have no interest in basketball, but plenty of people do.

It's just a matter of opinion.

Some people really enjoy watching golf and tennis.

It's an individual sport but also a team sport
it's a simple sport to understand but hard to play well
no game clock, if you have outs to play with you can still win, no melting the clock

Long seasons are traditional and bring in the revenue. It also allows for a balanced schedule (home/away series is a lot of games) and washes the randomness and flukiness out of the game.

Which… is why it’s weird the divisional series are 5 games! Weird stuff happens all the time over 3 games!

I like the college baseball format. But it’s punishing to play from the losers bracket.

I’ll probably watch more than half the Dodgers’ games this season, but some of that will be maybe half watching while I’m doing something else. Probably a lot of it is: I just thinks it’s better than anything else on. I’ve thought that since I was a kid and we got cable and TBS and the Braves.

Nah, completely disagree with this.

Part of the charm of MLB baseball is the fact that it's basically a daily event from late spring until fall. The entire summer, you get it daily. As a kid in middle and high school in the early 80's, I'd spend my lazy summers swimming in my parents' pool, and watching the Cubs with Harry Caray on WGN. Were they good? No, not except a few rare years... that didn't matter. There was no game clock, it was just baseball in the sunshine. It was fricking glorious, felt like it would never end. My dream was to be able to spend a summer in the bleachers there, or even better- on the rooftops barbecuing.

So how much time passes these days between the MLB world series and the next season’s preseason games?

Aren’t we crowning MLB champs around Thanksgiving now?
