Helena, Arkansas was the capital of the blues before Elvis and Memphis.
Started in 1941, King Biscuit Time is the longest running radio broadcast company in the nation.
It was the first radio show to feature the blues and the first radio show to broadcast live blues performances.
It was one of the earliest examples of integrated radio in the south.
It was so pivotal in broadcasting the blues sound around the nation and the world that influenced artists such as Elvis, Cash, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton and many future artists.

Same as Mississippi. Great history, but no destination. It’s the whole eastern half of the state. Johnny cash was damn near from Missouri. I’ve driven through his home town 20 times. Everyone worth a damn and who had the means went to Memphis.

Just for clarity, Rock Music was born in the South along with Blues, Jazz, Country, and Bluegrass. The first recorded rock song happened in Memphis. Gregg Allman would tell you that Southern Rock isn’t a thing since Rock came from the South.

Jimmie Rodgers is the most important artist on that list.

Don't forget that Garland County native Rubye Rose Blevins known professional as Patsy Montana was the first female country-western singer to have a million selling single called, "I want to be a cowboy's sweetheart."

ETA: And further more, Drive-by Truckers is not an Athens band anyway. They are a north Alabama band. So you don’t even get to count them. Just because Alabama has played a lot of games at the Georgia Dome doesn’t make them a Georgia team. I wish Patterson Hood’s bitch arse were from Georgia. But he isn’t. He is from Muscle Shoals. I am glad he left and went to Portland finally. I hope he is enjoying Chaz and still not being able to sing worth a frick.
