Stay with 4 teams or expland to 8 or 16? I think adding more teams diminishes the value but clearly we saw this year what the value is - to give the #3 and #4 teams a chance even if they have lost during the season. Paid off this year to have the playoffs but do you see it expanding any time soon?

Four is fine. Expanding it will only change the argument to the 8th and 9th place teams.

They will change in the next few years after enough teams get left out. 8 teams is about as far as it can go without it taking away from the regular season. It already takes away from the conference championship games at 4. 16 is too watered down and will have teams that aren't great or make for good games.

The main problem with expanding is it will give more teams arguments to be in the last spots. 4 there might be 2 extra teams with a legit argument. 8 would be about 4. 16 would be about 8 to 10 teams with arguments.

If they stay at 4 they need to have strict guidelines for who can get in. Like winning your conference.

I see no reason why it shouldn't be 8.

No matter what changes... nothing will stand in the way of Mississippi State Bulldogs in 2018.

If they stay at 4, it definitely needs to be the best 4 with no requirements related to conference championship. If they expand, then, they could do that.

Ironically, going to 8 is only going to increase the chance that the SEC gets two and possibly 3 teams in.

Let it be 8. Bama can lose up to 2 games and get in guaranteed every season.

If they do eventually go to 8 (which I think they will at some point) for the love of god I hope they caveat the conference championship team automatic qualifier by saying the conference champ has to be at least ranked in the Top 20. And any G5 qualifier should be ranked in the top 10.

Four is enough. Expand it 8 then teams 9 & 10 will complain about being left out. Expand to 16 or do like BBall and go 64 then teams will still complain about being left out. The playoffs are supposed to be the best of the best; not the best and then the rest.

Also, an 8 or 16 team playoff would just take away the importance of the regular season.

Odd thing about using this last season as motivation to expand the playoffs is that it kinda feels like the playoff committee got exactly what they wanted. Obviously this is speculation, but it strikes me as a bit too storybook. Before the Iron Bowl, the dominant narrative was that UGA and Bama would clash in an epic matchup, two Process-oriented teams winning big, with the mentor and his longest-lasting student going head-to-head. But the Iron Bowl ended that. The other, more-national narrative was the rubber match between Bama and Clemson. So the committee got both of those narratives. The rubber match settled the three-year rivalry, and the Tide and the Bulldogs got to play the game everyone expected them to play in the SECCG.

In a way, the playoff committee probably considered this the perfect ending as far as who got to play whom to satisfy the season's narrative. But, then, expanding the playoffs is not up to them, so I guess it doesn't matter.

Until an 8-4 team upsets a 12-0 team. Then what?

Because if not they don't need to have conference championship games then. It rewarded Bama without having to play an extra game (more rest or chance of getting players hurt) while punishing Auburn (who would have been in over Bama had they not had to play). Plus UGA who had to play an extra game and have less rest and chanced players being hurt.

In that situation Bama was rewarded for losing to Auburn. Which should never be the case.

I think if you go to an 8-team playoff you've got to cut a game somewhere. A 15-game season is already too long IMO.

I think 8 is the right number . You still could only lose 1 or 2 games tops so regular season would still matter.
