So you think over 10% of the programs each year deserve a shot?

Why not? Almost 38% of NFL teams get a shot every single year.

quote:That would work. And if it were to be today - here's the top 6 and the list of others who would not make it....
A 6 team playoff would be perfection.
IN:
bama
miami
clemson
wisc
oklahoma
auburn
OUT:
UCF - 10-0
USC - Likely to win Pac12
OSU
Georgia
TCU
Of course that list will change after this last weekend and conference title games.

Firstly, holy cow you a terrified. That’s hilarious.
Secondly, in no universe does a team who do not win their conference, did not play in their conference chamionship game, and did win their sub-division deserve to play for a National championship. Definitely not in college football...

And yet that's the way they do it at every other level of college football...
FCS - 16 teams
D2 - 28 teams
D3 - 32 teams
NAIA - 16 teams

I would be alright with this but

P5 conference winners and 3 at large
This no way. It should be the top 8 teams in the final rankings with no consideration to winning your conference. This P5 crap is just that. There are G5 teams that could beat a lot of P5 teams. Play your regular season 12 games and if you get lucky and play in the CCG, the top 8 go no matter what conference they are from.
P5 winner should not be a free pass.

The BCS selection format was way better than this crap we have now. Top 4, 6, or even 8 with the BCS selection format. The committee is goofy. It's fine for a way to pick 64-68 teams in CBB, but it sucks for 4 in football.

Have the #3 and #4 teams been destroyed in those tournaments?

Sure, sometimes they do. What does that even matter? A 16 team playoff won't start a month after everyone's last game so the odds that multiple teams lay complete eggs will be diminished significantly.

I think a suedo 16 team playoff would work
Eliminate all G5 championship games
Play P5 ccgs as scheduled. (10)
Top 2 G5 champs meet on campus (2)
4 at large P5 / Ind meet in 2 games on campus (2)
Winners of all 8 games then sceeded for on campus games the following week. (Only conf champs/ or top 4 ranked Ind can host)
Advance to playoffs as is.
I know a lot of people talk about eye test and what they believe is the best team as compared to most deserving. Hey bfortunatkey I think a lot times the “best teams” are who ESPN deems is. With 130 teams I tend to lean toward most deserving.
I truly think that you need to win something before winning something else. I say this knowledge ng there is a chance UGA doesn’t win SEC and will be one of the teams looking at that final spot.
But with 4 teams only , you need to win so nothing first. And that goes for any team no matter who they are.

HELL NO,
But you don't need a playoff if the NCAA would get rid of the RENT A WIN games from non conference opponents.
Replace the BUY A WIN games with other POWER 5 Conference games and everyone would damn near play each other before the national title game.

I can’t think of any. Ever.
didnt Bama finish around 16th in 1942 yet still claimed the NC?

They would have been seeded low, but nobody would want them on their side of the bracket. Worthy to win a title? Maybe not by BCS standards, but on the field they could beat you.
But the real problem with 16, is that then there is enough teams, that you have to include the MAC, Sun Belt etc.
Posted on 11/20/17 at 11:55 am to Tuscaloosa
If the 16th ranked team beats consecutively the #1 team, then the # 8 team, then the #4 team, then the #2 team, they should be the National Champions.

An 8-team playoff with a more objective ranking system would be ideal.
