If someone before the year told me we went to overtime with State I’d have said there’s no way in hell we’d have taken Georgia to overtime. Everyone except for Kentucky looks capable of being dangerous on their day this year

I think pre and post NIL/Transfer portal eras of football just aren’t comparable, and we’re still viewing results through the old lens.

College football players have always been notoriously inconsistent week to week.

That has been accentuated by players not sticking around to actually develop and learn a system. It also means teams can’t stockpile 5*’s three layers deep, and sub out a guy having a bad game.

I think it’s a good thing there’s more parity, although it looks like the quality of play is dropping. We’re going to have a bunch of guys who transfer too many times to get a degree and also don’t develop into NFL-ready prospects.

had to travel to Arky, Vandy, and A&M. Oh, the horror! They have only played THREE road games since joining the SEC (excluding OK in Dallas).
Fair point. Kyle Field is not at all an intimidating venue.

And this year it flips where Texas has only 3 home games but 4 away games. So why is everyone still crying?

again I ask: why is this board so obsessed with all things trans?

Hmmm. Not so sure LSU can beat Ole Miss. We'll have to wait and see if they can do it next year.

They lost by 5 not 25 lol.

I'm sorry, I've been lurking on this board from time to time but I had to create an account just to say this. Just because these FEI numbers say South Carolina has had the #2 schedule so far this season, doesn't mean it is even remotely true. Back in mid August (and likely today as well), there isn't a single person in this thread who would have said South Carolina had a tougher schedule up to this point in the season than teams like Alabama (played FSU, Wisconsin and Georgia) and Georgia (played Alabama and Tennessee). They have played a terrible Virginia Tech team that got blown out by Old Dominion, an FCS team and the other 3 non-Big 6 SEC East teams. How could the schedule makers have made their schedule any easier, give them Coastal Carolina in the early season as well? Their schedule had 0 preseason ranked teams up to this point and only Missouri was receiving votes in the AP Poll. The difficult portion of their schedule hasn't even started yet with 5 current top 13 teams up next.

Meanwhile, both Vandy and Missouri had a preseason top 15 South Carolina in the early portion of their schedules. Is it their fault South Carolina has laid an egg and ruined their SOS up to this point? Maybe the blame for having a tougher early FEI SOS should be placed on teams failing to win their games and not the schedules they play.

Now that it’s pro football, parity’s the new normal.

Doesn't pro football have spending and salary caps?

The NFL does. Professional football IE people being paid to play football =/= NFL.

College football is more matchup based than it's ever been before. It's really interesting now.

Completely agree on the parity. Since Mizzou joined I don't recall there being this much parity. Even prior to that (admittedly a more casual observer back then), the SEC never seemed to have had this much parity.

Definitely some schedule anomolies here with front loading the lesser teams (at least for Mizzou). I think the conference sets the dates for conference games so not a lot could be done other than to fit them in the open spots. But, tbh, having this many weak non-conference teams is largely self inflicted. A lot of that goes back to our prior AD (we even played at UMASS last year) and scrambling to rework the schedule when necessary, spots have to be filled by someone. Not to mention kU (our power 4 opponent) kinda sucks - but they always seem to find a way to screw us, especially when they can't beat us. And - of course - South Carolina dropped from 11th to out of the poles the week we played them. From this point on Mizzou's schedule gets real.

Rankings don't matter until the season is over.anyway - so enjoy the games and let it play out.

As Big Bro pointed out...

The SEC schedules aren't really equitable yet in terms of games played.

I suppose it is possible that it ends up with a bunch of 6-2 teams at the top...

But it is also possible that a couple of teams will ultimately rise to the top.

What is unique is that this season it isn't clear who those teams might be... if it does indeed happen.

Solid coaching is more important than ever now in the SEC bc there are not drastic differences in talent like it used to be for the top teams.

But Missouri’s schedule from here on out is very tough. If SC had been as good early as everyone expected, the schedule looks a little different. Missouri could easily be 7 and 5 or 8 and 4 when all is said and done e and still be a pretty good team. Same with Vandy and Texas. This is why you let it play out before declaring who is good or bad or in between.

With NIL and the portal, a LOT of teams have a good enough starting 22 to win on a given Saturday, but only a few teams have that AND quality depth.

It's an interesting schedule quirk that everyone we have played so far, including this Saturday, was undefeated when we played them.

We've only had September football games. Wait until after mid-October to get a better picture. I wouldn't call 2007 crazy until the Oct 14 AP Poll, which had

1 Ohio State (7–0)
2 South Florida (6–0)
3 Boston College (7–0)

And also a shittier product as better players will not remain in the same system.

That all depends upon how you evaluate the quality of the product.

You could have a handful of dominant teams that steamroll everyone else and don't face each other until the very end of the season.

Or, you can have meaningful games each week between teams that are relatively evenly matched, and the outcomes are always in doubt.

I agree with the sentiment of the post. However, I think even quality of play against mediocre or below average teams can tell you some things.

Like Alabama losing to FSU in a blowout fashion?
