It is mid June and there are only 5 SEC schools with a commited high school player and no one has more than 1.

Early siging day is Nov 11th.

LINK

Maybe someone who follows this more closely than I can let us know if this is normal.

I see that it has. There are many schools that have a low number of committed players at this point, but SEC basketball has a total of 5 players committed. Five. For all 16 schools.

That seems crazy low to me.

I got beaten over the head here when I pointed out that every overseas pro that a program signs means one less U.S. high school player gets a scholarship, which for most is the only shot they have at college.

I could easily see a massive amount of HS basketball players having to start at a lower level than they’re otherwise have to, to prove themselves before being scooped up in the portal.

It was hard to win with a lot of freshman already. Now there’s very little reason to go that route.

Only 3 programs have more than a single player; only 23 schools have a commitment.

I haven't followed basketball recruiting enough to know if that's normal for this time of year or not.

Don’t care. They wanted payment this is part of the negatives that come along with that

You think that this year’s high school seniors were pushing hard for NIL when they were 12 and 13 years old? Are you saying that a bunch of 6th and 7th graders were behind NIL?

Sure - but their agents were their dads (or moms as they are the ones that got them to travel ball practice).

They can push to have it go back to the old way. But they won’t

It's killing everything. These kids want top dollar coming out of highschool. Why overpay for an unproven player that's most likely not going to be at your school next year, when you could put that money towards a proven commodity?

It hurts every single major sport. And some minor ones as well

The collapse is coming, and I'm actively rooting for it.

Wonder how much of it has to do with programs not wanting to pay for an unknown coming out of high school… on top of that hs recruits are wanting to be paid top dollar and aren’t going to stay longer than the next portal cycle. Why even bother?

And programs could not accept transfers and choke the system to death. But they won’t.

D1 scholarship, but the small schools and lower divisions still offer scholarships and aren't pulling former pros.
