Is "History". Today's players don't care about history, it means absolutely nothing to them. It's something fans/media overhype to fill page space and to generate viewership intrigue.
An example would be Alabama-OM game. "Ole Miss hasn't wont in Tuscaloosa since 88". It sounds great on paper, but most of the players on the field were only 1-1 over the last 2 years in that match up, and in the minds of players on both teams, the other was beatable.
Now I see Ole Miss fans pulling the same shite with Florida, pointing to us having a great overall record against Florida/beating Tebow when they were #1. None of that matters, history doesn't register a single blip on the mental radar of those Florida players. They believe, (correctly so), they absolutely have a good shot to win, and Ole Miss better watch their arse on the road this week.
Historical success doesn't win games, players do. Which is also why we've seen a surge of recruiting by teams that haven't historically recruited well. It's the biggest known secret in the world that players are paid and many will go to the highest bidder, but aside from that, now with the SEC network/expanded broadcasting, a player who historically would have had to go to a traditional powerhouse to receive national exposure can go to a smaller school and receive the same thing.
Just ask Texas or Michigan fans how much history matters in games or recruiting, the only thing obsessing over history does is foster arrogance/bad decision making within organizations.

History is the ONLY reason Florida beat Tennessee and Kentucky.

Know how I know you're a fan of a team with no history?

It is true that past games do not really matter at all to a new game when a new game is played.
However those streaks are usually indicative of certain things inherent in the programs so they can often act as a very rough predictor (but alone in a vacuum don't mean much).

Agreed 100%. I remember hearing all kinds of ridiculous reasoning for why LSU would lose to Bama at home in 2000. Because they hadn't done it since 1969 and so forth. That kind of stuff always makes me laugh.

History has no impact on the game, but it is everything from a bragging rights perspective.

Are you still melting over that win in Tuscaloosa?

ThIs post was more motivated by stuff I read on OM boards about Florida.

History and tradition never matter to a program who has neither.

"You know, deep down, you just don't lose to Tennessee."
