So not that great like I said.
Not even the best coach in his own division.
Since Bama is having some growing pains right now, I'm going to help out:
I will bet my immortal soul that some Alabama fan of my generation {I'm 64) said THIS Saturday night: "Dig him up"

The number 1 reason Fulmer was successful was because Georgia hired a total dud when Dooley retired, and couldn't get rid of him until he took the program down the tubes. The high school talent in Georgia was basically ceded to Tennessee and a bit to FSU too. Both won MNCs during that time. Frankly, Heiple is a better coach than Fulmer, but he doesn't have access to talent like the former did.
Ah, love the folks who subscribe to the imaginary state border force field theory. The idea that a 300 mile radius around Knoxville is as fertile of a recruiting ground as there is boggles the mind for y'all.
But ya, Tennessee success or failure in football is all about UGA football in the end. For over 100 years now Tennessee has depended on the UGA football program to chart out whether or not we can be good at football based on what they are doing. We can't accomplish great things unless UGA plays bad enough and allows us to be good. lol
Brilliant stuff. Fun lil world you got going on there.

Yeah, tough sledding when you're in the eat and the only competent team at the time was Florida, who he could never beat.

Majors nearly drinking himself to death-thus causing him to miss half a football season because his heart was giving out all while under him that year our football took embarrassing early Ls; plus the years of his continued commitment to treating the boosters and admin like crap all added up and ultimately did Ole Johnny Boy in as the head Tennessee football coach.
Phil was just the most qualified and worthy replacement at the time considering both the familiarity and the fact that as interim he won bout every damn game as a head coach and didn't look back for a decade until his prime teetered off the last 4 years or so of his tenure on the Hill.
Johnny built Tennessee back to the upper echelon of the SEC after a downswing in the 70s. Fulmer elevated the program to new heights in the modern era.

Dear Lord don’t let them hire Mangino. That dynasty would look like The Roman Empire.

Fulmer was 5-10 vs Florida. Of course Alabama was 4-11 vs Fat Phil. Like it wasn't ideal losing to Florida more often than not, but at least we didn't lose to them as often as you guys lost to Phil. Coulda been worse! Plus, at the end of the day he got multiple SEC rings and the same amount of natty rings as Spurrier: one.
Good thing though it was the days of when you'd hire a coach only to fire him a day later for maxing out the Uni Credit Card at the hooker joint. Gosh, how LUCKY we were to be allowed to be so competitive nationally via the suck-ness of Alabama and UGA then. We were graciously gifted a roster for a decade plus that generally was bigger, faster, stronger, and deeper than UGA and Bammer's throughout his career.
Just like how Tennessee pulled the reigns back in the mid 2000s and graciously allowed for the rise of Saban and Richt's programs. Programs like Alabama and UGA can only be great when programs like Tennessee don't have their shite together, duh! Good stuff
Phil had NOTHING to do with his success, NONE!

I remember the Bama fans whining and bitching wanting to leave the SEC after Vols hammered them 7 years in a row and of course the NCAA presser accusing them of having a "culture of cheating".

For most of his career he was the most winning active coach.
So he was pretty much on top of the heap during his career.

He gets credit for being a very good recruiter but he also benefitted by horrible HC coaching hires from UGA and Bama in the 90's and wasn't quite the same program after Cutcliffe left.
The 2001 team was absolutely loaded and had no business losing to LSU in the SECC.

I give you one.
While Johnny Majors was fighting for his life with open heart surgery Fulmer screwed him and stole his job from him.
Another act of being gutless was not showing up to SEC media days like a scared drug dealer not showing up to court.

He wasn't a great coach, he benefited from Alabama being in turmoil after Stallings quit.
In Fulmer's last 2 games against Bama with Stallings as Head Coach, Tennessee outscored Bama 61-27...but, sure...it was the turmoil AFTER Stallings quit before he had success.
Actually, let's expand it to the last 5 meetings between the 2 coaches. The record is tied at 2-2-1 with Tennessee outscoring Bama 101 to 78. But, yeah...it was AFTER Stallings left that Fulmer found success...
