Built in a hill so it's not been obscured by the modern skyline

Only one is taller than the White House

Louisiana's state capitol looks like something right out of the Soviet Union. Disgusting building/design.

LA, TN, and FL are the only ugly ones. SC is small but in a neat location between the city and campus.

There is no between. SC's campus and State House are both smack in the middle of the city.

Atlanta has the gold dome, but Stone Mountain’s granite has been used in numerous state capitals around the country.

Boy aren't you ignorant of the memorials on our State House grounds. I mean your Midnight Yell is right next to the George Washington statue where you proclaimed to jizz ergo Aggies hate George Washington.

This. Office buildings of the SC House of Representatives share an intersection with the campus at the WW1 memorial.

Great looking buildings. Other than Austin, Nashville, and Frankfort most are surrounded by crappy neighborhoods.

Yep, but wasn't the old State House still in use at the time? The old State House was completely burned down in that fire and a lot of valuable stuff was lost. I read that the old State House was designed by the same guy who designed the White House, James Hoban.

So are Atlanta, Baton Rouge, Jackson & Columbia. Of course I’ve never really been to Atlanta. I just drive through there from Hahira when I’m taking Darlene to Dollywood.

The Arkansas State capitol was actually modeled after the Mississippi State capito
Unsubstantiated. The Arkansas capitol started construction first, so you're probably referring to the dome, which the only evidence of similar architecture plans shows that Mississippi (Link) used Mann's plans to build their dome.

Kentucky's is in a random small town. It's nice and all but very out of place.
It's situated between the 2 biggest cities in KY - Lexington and Louisville. Not sure the history as to why Frankfort is the capitol, but it doesn't appear to just be a random selection.
Missouri's seems more out of place. Though it is between KC and St Louis, it's well off the interstate that connects those 2 cities.

When I was a kid in the 4th grade, we studied Alabama history. As a class, we took a bus pilgrimage to Montgomery to tour the capitol. And we all got our picture taken in front of the Jefferson Davis star on the top of the steps where he stood and proclaimed secession from the Union. And this wasn't back in the 50's. This was circa 1977.

quote:Uhhh, yes, it was. Are you really going to try and lecture/argue a lifelong Lexingtonian who's family goes back in this city 3 generations and who was part of the settling party in Kentucky, who has a few towns and 1 county named for my ancestors.
Lexington was never the capital of Kentucky (although it was by far the most advanced and cultered city in Kentucky's early days), and Frankfort was not chosen as a compromise between Lexington and Louisville because of its location.
Theres a pretty food fricking chance I know more about my state's history than some Texan.
Frankfort was selected afterwards once the state became official. Lexington was the first capitol for a bit. After the Civil War they tried to relocate it to either Louisville or Lexington and the compromise was reached to have it in Frankfort because it was between the two cities.
Child please.
