The “1980” joke was stupid

Frankly, I dont get the 1980 jokes (hey, especially since A&M is 1939.)
But really, 40 years aint THAT long and a bunch of you teenagers will understand that when you actually experience the years flying by.
I suspect the joke is fun for FL and TN since they have (or had) more recent Natties, but in all honesty, a National Championship is pretty rare- there are probably only 25 or so schools that have won even one in the last hundred years.
Good for GA. I hipe they dont start throwing around 1996 jokes or whatever year TN last won it. Making fun of a NC years later is about as stupid as making fun of Justin Verlander in 2060 for marrying Kate Upton- i mean, she’ll be so old and it will be 40 years since he last married the hottest woman on the planet.

The joke was because UGA was always on the cusp. That's why it doesn't apply to ATM.

In fairness, it's also why the 1998 thing doesn't work for us. We've been a train wreck rather than solid or good. "1980" was about the futility of being so damned close but not managing to grab the ring.

This reflects age . . . . you naturally anchor on the college football landscape you first come up through. I really got into SWC teams and football in general in the late 80s and Georgia's natty was pretty recent. I never stopped thinking of them as a title contender. Ditto for the Vols. They were rolling in 1989 with Reggie Cobb and Chuck Webb and Andy Kelley and blew out Arkie in the Cotton Bowl that year. They went on to win all through the 90s including their last natty. I still struggle to see how consistently bad they have been.
On the flip-side, OU and LSU and USC and Texas and other programs were so bad then that I have never been able to think of them as "blue bloods" or whatever moniker these teams bestow on themselves.
It is all frame of reference.

They’ve been on the cusp just recently (last 5
years or so…) and finally broke through. #2, #4, #7 …. since 2017. Stupid to be making fun of a team thats kicking the arse of almost every team it plays gor the last 5 years.
it also had a good run in the early 2000’s.
