I'd venture a guess that the coaches had little effect on this. And to be honest, how many of us are willing to stick our necks out today to speak out on issues of race? Not many bc we don't want to be fired. That was probably a similar reason why Bear stayed mum on it, too.
The 1966 denial was aimed at the state of Alabama as a whole. The schoolhouse door was in 1963, Selma was in 1965, etc.

Truman integrated the Military - 1948
Dean Smith signed Charlie Scott - 1966-67
Ernie Davis wins the Heisman - 1961
The first Black Player at Michigan was in 1890
The first Black FB in the then Pac8 - Kenny Washington 1939 was a teammate of Jackie Robinson listed above
That part in bold above is why so many people want to see the bldgs renamed and these confederate monuments taken down, it is because so many people in this part of the country suffer from "widespread revisionist history"

You think Bryant didn't know black athletes would help him win games in 1946 and 1947? Or 1959? That doesn't make any sense.

Weird, I didn't know that you knew him.
Did he tell you this on his death bed, or will you guys pals even as far back as the 60s?

Remind us again why you're on an SEC message board?
Isn't there an ACC community somewhere that needs a good lecturing?

YOU are coming for YOURSELF. You are just an ideologically-possessed Leftist, and therefore too much of a slogan-spouting FUNDAMENTALIST to understand where this inevitably leads. Make no mistake though, Nancy-eventually you hang yourself with your own rope.

According to BLM, there is no difference.

the truth is....the SEC was the last hold out Conf. to sign black players. bama was one of the very last SEC teams to sign a black player.

Yeah, and the ESPN documentary "Saturday's in the South" interviewed a black player who spoke glowingly of Bryant and would have been Alabama's first black player at Alabama had he not had family issues that kept him from going.
It's also well-documented Bryant tried to recruit black players to Kentucky in the 1950s. He was ahead of his time in that respect. And ESPN recognized it.

To be fair, the OFFICIAL 2020 DEFINITION OF RACISM is whoever and whatever any random Progressive says it is at any given moment depending on their mood and who/what they want to destroy. So if the Prog Mob says The Bear is racist, than The Bear is racist. To object to that, is itself proof of YOUR racism. Also to be silent about that, is racist.

I’m on board with Bear Bryant being called a racist. His statue must be taken down! I see why you people enjoy this so much now.

Good point. He spent his life fricking with and over white opponent's players and their white coaches. Ruining their dreams and causing the coaches and AD's to lose their jobs. So in effect he was unintentionally BLM before it's time. He destroyed the educated white elite engineering school in Atlanta (Tech, who he hated) causing them to flee the league and give up their snobby white privilege to the public school trash in Athens.
Truth is he was in his soul the perpetual underdog because of his upbringing. Admitting he would hide when his family made him ride the mule and wagon through town peddling produce. Was brought to Tuscaloosa as a HS student having to take and pass several courses before he was formally admitted. Was embarrassed by his lack of manners and dress. Hell, he was so broke he wrestled a live bear for a dollar and never forgot he got stiffed out of the dollar. His most memorable moment in the Rose Bowl where they played and won the national title was a play where he and the tackle on his side of the line both saw some pocket change laying on the ground in front of them when they lined up. Both forgot about blocking and dove for the change and fought over it. LOL!

Well, yeah! He was the FOOTBALL COACH! He was NOT the VP in charge of diversity or the governor or the president of the school or anyone else who you could argue had more responsibility to integrate the program. His job was to win football games, not be a social engineer.
If you knew anything about Bryant, you would know he grew up poor white trash in rural Arkansas in the Jim Crow south. He certainly had more in common in his background with the poor, underprivileged black athlete in the 60's and 70's than the Steve Sloan types. He would have pushed for integration of transgender Martians if he thought it would help him win games, since that was his purpose. But you're going to judge someone based on his motives, that you THINK you are aware of. Pardon me, your highness, I didn't know you were omniscient!

That is 99.9% of the white population of today. Protest a civil war to start a civil war. The only difference this time is, there is no freedom involved. When you give away a freedom, you don't get it back.
