He probably would have started. It's his choice. Hurts the team, talent wise

Athletes at all schools receive help and tutorship for what they do for the athletic department and school as a whole. I'm sure Texas may have more resources than some schools, but that's not to say that all schools would have this available?

How do you know he won't pass his classes without help of tutors for student-athletes? Do you know this kid?

Man...STFU

What exactly is him sitting out going to accomplish? You want to help your community? Be a positive example of someone who made it through hard work and go get your bag!

Maybe having a diverse group of people watching something they all care about together is what this country needs right now? Unfortunately with the damned virus that won't happen soon

Dude you're lying

You watch because they are talented players, if the P5 were suddenly populated by players with DIII talent, you wouldn't give a damn abt CFB, hell you'd probably start following HS FB

Easy to do this right now to virtue signal during Corona and get all those delicious likes and retweets. fricking people are insatiable.

I highly doubt once actual workouts start and games approach he’ll stick by this. One because all his friends and teammates will be playing. Two because presumably he enjoys football and once it’s occurring will miss playing it. And three Bc if he wants to make six figures at the nfl level he needs to fricking play.

Has this kid not worked hard to potentially "go get [his] bag"? Last I checked he has been starting for Texas the past season and a half and I haven't heard many negative comments about his work ethic. I think the point he's trying to make is the fact that he thinks this issue is bigger than football and wants to set an example for those younger than him that could be fighting the same cultural or societal issues.

You may think this accomplishes nothing, and in the great grand scheme of things, no - this alone wouldn't accomplish much. It's more than just him, though, and he realizes that, and therefore he sees it fit to peacefully protest. Thus far, the comments from his teammates seem to be supportive, and I think his coaches would support the same, so I don't see why myself as a lifelong fan can't also support and see that there is some good intention behind this. The Constitution protects the right to peaceful protest, so I 100% respect his decision to do such.

Is that why people watched in the 50’s and 60’s?

College football has been popular since it was literally frat kids at Ivy’s playing.

People aren’t going to stop caring about LSU v Alabama and start caring about Jackson State v Grambling regardless of who’s on which team. There’s no rooting interest.

As long as your university can be competitive than yea youll watch. If just Tennessee's players were downgraded to SEC level walk on's and we got demolished every game because every other school kept their best athletes... then yea that would suck. If its an even playing field i would still watch the hell out of CFB. Its vastly inferior to the NFL as it is already. If the quality of player is the only thing thats worth watching then CFB should have been out for you already.

Very selfish then.
Certainly his right to quit, but I would not allow him back on the team. He was given the privilege of getting an education (plus all the other privileges that athletes get) to play football. That was the 'deal'.
He is violating his end of the deal.
Out you go then.

Kid hasn't thought through this very well. If black athletes start refusing to play...universities and pro teams are still going to provide a product for their consumers. So they sit out, and we go back to all-white leagues? Isn't that sort of the opposite of what we're going for here? These dudes need to stop living off the emotion of the moment and learn how to think things through to their logical conclusions.

If this is his form of protest, so be it. I'd take a peaceful protest of sitting out a few games than the violent riots and looting we're seeing.

He's getting an athletic scholarship, so he has the obligation to compete. People on academic scholarships don't get the option to sit out to protest. I don't get to leave my job to go protest. If he wants to sit out, then he can give up his scholarship. He's really making a sacrifice then.

So...what does he want to happen in order for him to take the field?
