Texas, TAMU, FSU and Ark were supposed to join the SEC in 1992

What a conference that would have been. Texas was the worst in FB of those four at the time, but they got better in the 90s. UT not exactly a cultural fit, but I assume it wasn't quite as gay back then. In the end i think they didn't want to join a conference where they wouldn't be kingpin.
quote:
Crowe: Frank (Broyles) asked me, "Jack, what would you think about us going to the SEC?" I told him, "Let me tell you something, Frank: We have a hard time beating Texas here. There's five Texases over there. Five."
Barry Switzer, Hall of Fame Oklahoma coach, played at Arkansas in 1956-60: Hell, in the SEC, all those stadiums seat 100,000. They're all the University Ofs, you know?
quote:
Crowe: I was told that Texas and Texas A&M were coming with us, along with Florida State. [SEC commissioner] Roy Kramer was going for the whole enchilada now. He was going for all the television markets because that's all it was about. It was about television. It was about going to get the TV contract and sharing the revenue.
Switzer: I remember Frank Broyles telling me why he went to the SEC. He said, "Hell, as soon as I signed the contract, I got a $6 million raise for our program."
Toward the end, attendance had become a major problem for the league's smaller schools, with Texas, Texas A&M and Arkansas essentially subsidizing the rest of the teams.
SMU had moved back to Ownby Stadium, which held just 23,783. Texas A&M drew seven of the 10 biggest crowds in the history of Baylor's Floyd Casey Stadium, which the Aggies called Kyle Field North. Rice Stadium, which held 70,000 fans and once hosted a Super Bowl, drew 17,900 for a 1990 game against SMU.

Three schools didn’t sack up to join the toughest conference in the country.
One did.
Then it won the west three times.

We would have ended up back in the ACC if not for the SEC.

We might have actually won some shite.

I know SEC really wanted Florida State but Bowden was the one that nixed that deal
At that time, I don't think Florida would have cared but now they would never get Fla St
I doubt Texas was all that interested in the SEC back then

Division wins are nice and all, even if they come when you're 8-5, but I'll take actual conference titles. 92, 93, 98, and then divions in 97 and 10. Also should have been 94, but the NCAA is a bitch.

SEC West divisional titles are better than Big 12 conference titles.

Money talks and I understand Ark and A&M leaving for that and to get away from UT. But from the perspective of fans, coaches and players I think you take the easier path to conference titles, big bowls and NC wins or appearances: recruits dgaf that Clemson wins an easy conference, only that they are in the playoff every year and produce draft picks. A&M was cleaning up in recruiting those years even though the SWC was shite. Hell, I wish LSU had been in the SWC instead of SEC for all those decades

tbh the Big 12 was probably better than the SEC from like 1996-2001. Tennessee and Florida were the only consistently great SEC teams. Nebraska, Colorado, K-State and A&M had been strong in that era, but it became the Texas and Oklahoma show after

No doubt. The big 12 was a better football conference for a while.

Before Florida State joined the ACC, Bobby Bowden said that you don't join the SEC if you want to win. I don't remember the rest of the quote but they won 12 ACC tiles.
Texas has and will NEVER join the SEC. They won't be able to control the SEC.

Jack Crowe was and still is a loser. The man lost to citadel in the first game of the season and got fired the next day.
Yet we still beat top ten Tennessee at Neyland stadium, beat South Carolina, beat LSU and tied Auburn in our first year without the loser Crowe.

The only program on that list that is on the level or above Texas is Alabama.

That's true now, but it wasn't from 1996 to about 2009 or so. The Big 12 was an equal to the SEC for the first 15 years that league was around.

Texas wanted the P10 for the Academic prestige. A&M wanted the SEC .. Both teams were blackmailed into the formation of the B12 if my timing is correct. I'm not sure of the dates here, honestly
Texas NEVER wanted the SEC
The SWC was a definitely a screw you, got mine league. I still remember when everything went down at SMU because I was friends with the AD's son. I used to watch Dickerson from the box seats.

Yep.
SCAR would have done some great things in the ACC. The Clemson rivalry would be even bigger than it is.
