I probably wouldn't dislike them as much being in the same conference tbqh. The whole ACC/SEC dynamic has really added to the rivalry. If for instance we never left and we somehow found ourselves on a SEC board like the Clemmers do, I could see some of us defending them/ACC to you baws. Then again none of us are that pathetic so you probably wouldn't see any Gamecock posters here if we never joined the SEC. I still think even without being Clemson's rival those clowns would be here.

How Texas nearly joined the SEC

In a recent interview, Schiller reflected back on how Arkansas and South Carolina became the 11th and 12th schools in the league. But the most shocking revelation concerned how close the University of Texas came to joining the SEC.

Schiller, who left the SEC to become the executive director of the United States Olympic Committee and would later serve as president of Turner Sports and CEO of YankeeNets (going from working for Ted Turner to George Steinbrenner), said Texas had virtually agreed to become an SEC member. Arkansas and Texas would join the SEC from the Western side and South Carolina and either Florida State, Miami or Virginia Tech would enter from the East.

The SEC didn't want A&M.

Three schools didn’t sack up to join the toughest conference in the country.

FSU was the only school that didn't want to join b/c of competition.

A&M and Texas didn't come b/c they had their funding threatened by state lawmakers.

The SEC wanted Texas, but Texas considered the conference academically inferior and beneath them.

It's a shame the way SMU was treated considering what the other schools did to them and the fact the NCAA used SMU was criminal and if not for statute of limitations SMU might have a pretty good lawsuit against the NCAA for damages

If that’s what you call it these days.

It’s akin to when I went to junior high in Greensboro. 9th grade “P-nut” acted like he wanted to fight 8th grade “P-nut” whom was a much better fighter.

9th grade P-nut’s 88 lb girlfriend was holding him back, restraining him from commencing.

“Hold me back....ima killim”.

A&M and Texas were straight up blackmailed by the legislature into the formation of the B12. There are some great historical accounts of the formation of the B12 that go into it in detail

Yeah the article mentions TTU and Baylor elected officials pushing for those schools to be included in the Big 12 or else UT and A&M would suffer. TBF Tech and Baylor were better than SMU, Rice, UH and TCU at the time but how tf does TTU have powerful legislator alums?

SMU was the worst offender of all of them in the SWC. Arkansas and Rice were the only schools that didn't get hit with any probation.

The governor of Texas at the time was a Baylor grad. She is a big reason we got stuck in the new big 12.

Yes. If it wasn’t for her, A&M might have been SEC bound. At the very least, she was able to get Baylor in the big 12 over Houston. Who had a better program.

I've met plenty of decent UT fans, but a sizeable chunk of them still have the attitude of "We don't want to be anything like those icky, heteronormative SEC rednecks who worship fooball!" Meanwhile the SEC has 6(?) AAU members and Texas tried to outbid Bama for Satan

Texas has always considered themselves Academically superior to everyone around them. It is why they craved the prestige of the P10, and to be associated with schools such as Stanford

There is a reason A&M calls them "teasippers" or "sips"

It was both. If you read RC Slocum's account of the events A&M and Texas were each prepared to go their separate ways. He had been given permission by the AD to approach the SEC, and Texas was actively talking to the P10 (Stanford objected)

When these events became known by other schools both Texas and A&M were summoned to a short-notice meeting and told they would go nowhere without both Tech and Baylor. Both Ann Richards and Bob Bullock were at that meeting
