This is the story in so many scandals throughout history you'd think people would catch on.

I agree big orange. They are only after Pearl because he was caught in a lie.

Cookout, I don't seem to recall a cookout.

saw it the other day. I will try to find later. He sent an email or letter to the families prior to their going to the NCAA for questioning, reminding them that their kids eligibility could be in jeopardy or something along those lines. They said that was one of the pieces of evidence against them.

Unless i misread it. if so my bad. but i am pretty sure that is what it said.

Unless he has the power to personally deem them ineligible that is not a threat.

If i got a letter saying i better be careful in what i say "meaning don’t say they were at the cookout(lie)" or else my kid could not be eligible I would consider that a threat.

Thats not rational. Rational would be factoring in the severity of the infraction that was covered up.

You're not being rational, this is the NCAA were talking about

Also, rational would be not lying over dumb shite

Pearl deserves at least one year ban.
UT, should get off lightly if they fire Pearl.

rational would be acting like lying over dumb shite is slightly less trivial than doing dumb shite.

Lets face it, people on the board and some in the media act like he's the biggest cheater the SEC has ever known.

Fact of the matter is, his infractions did not create a competitive advantage for UT, they did not include a financial transaction, they did not include any form of academic fraud, or any form of extra benefits.

He had a BBQ at his house, and told the NCAA he didn't.

He's already been fined 1.5 million dollars. Kept off the recruiting trail for a year, and suspended 8 games.

I agree with this.

Some of the violations now are ridiculous. Soon you won’t be able to recruit. Kids are just going to have to pick a school without getting to know anybody.

The fact of matter ACTUALLY is that he lied to the NCAA. They consider that to be on the same lines as purgery. Last I checked, MLB players werent getting in trouble for doing steroids, they are getting in trouble for LYING about doing steroids..

The NCAA doesnt have the power to put someone under oath and then charge them with purgery when they prove they are lying.

They also dont have subpoena power. Meaning that they need to have severe consequences for lying to deter people from doing so. Otherwise their investigations would never get anywhere because nobody would be scared to lie to them.

So to create an atmosphere where people know that if you lie to them, you get fricked, they hammer the hell out of people that lie to them. It's their version of a purgery charge. It makes people think twice before lying to them.

I am a big Bruce Pearl fan. And I really hate that this is happening. But you cant say that lying about a minor infraction should be considered less than actually committing it. Outright lying to the NCAA is NOT a minor infraction. Having a recruit over for dinner or whatever it was that he did, is.

This wont be a requirement from the NCAA, but it needs to happen. The guy has absolutely no control over his athletic department.

yeah.. I didn't mean the NCAA would require it. I can't believe he's not been fired yet though.

I know you're a Bama fan and what not, but "slightly less trivial" means that it should be more severe than the original charge.

I don't know why we keep on talking about the violation he committed. Its utterly irrelevant.

My prediction - I think people are going to be really upset when Pearl is coaching basketball at Tennessee next year. With 1 or 2 less scholarship players than he has now.

I must have just read that quickly and missed the actual wording, but my argument still applies. It is not "slightly less trivial" either. It is much worse in the eyes of the NCAA. For good reason. There has to be severe punishment for lying to them. Otherwise everyone would just lie to them about everything and their job would be even harder than it already is without subpeona power.
