So it doesn't feel weird to you to create fake rivalries and still cant win shite in the SEC????

Well that's weird to everyone else in the SEC.

As an Alabama fan, TAMU felt right from the very beginning. Mizzou still does not feel SEC like, but I’m not upset about it.

Sort of like the 92 expansion, Arkansas felt like a fit pretty quickly but it took me about 20 years before Scar felt like they belonged.

Here's how it feels:

You're a high school honors student, and by some administrative frick-up, you're assigned to phys ed classes with special ed students. Some have admirable physical prowess, but you still have to put up with gibbering, drooling mongoloids and buck toothed half-wits.

Either way, it has to be worth it to them every time the Texas fans come over here in a sad attempt to rain on their parade.

Every time the Oklahoma fans come over here with their poorly-disguised jealousy.

I miss the Big 8, but Texas, TTU, Baylor and A&M never really did much for me in the 20-ish years Mizzou was in the Big 12. You just can't easily get over trying to beat Nebraska for decades (literally) and then finally getting a good rivalry going with a team only to have it snatched away, and a super bitter rivalry with a team that's literally steeped in civil war skirmishes (hell, Mizzou fans wear a shirt with a picture of Lawrence burning with pride):

There's the fifth down, the flea kicker, and tons of basketball history too.

It doesn't help that the SEC West is like a different conference, when you only see the different teams every 7 years. Ridiculous, and I think a 9 game conference season or getting rid of permanent rivals would do a lot to integrate.

Plus, I'm from the northeast corner of Missouri, and we grow corn and soybeans here...when I drove down to Louisiana for the LSU game last year I saw a cotton field for the first time

So yeah, it feels weird to be detached from that. Football is great, and maybe with basketball on the uptick it'll help, but it still feels like Mizzou is an outsider, and truth be told I'm sure it will for me for a long time, and maybe forever. But my oldest son was 2 when Mizzou switched, so my kids won't know any better, they'll grow up hating Arkansas and Tennessee just as much as I hate Mobilehoma.

First time I went to see A&M play Iowa State in '96, and saw road signs telling me how far it was to Minneapolis, that was weird. Nothing weird at all about playing LSU and Arkansas, since we've played them forever. The rest feels a lot less weird than going to places like Ames and Lincoln--even Boulder.

You’re a sad little fella

And as we are well aware, most likely not even an SEC fan

Exactly! We should have never joined to XII. We should have put our foot down in '95 and joined the SEC at that time.

And I think it's weird that Missouri is in the SEC.

I propose a 3 way roommate switch: 1) MU to the B1G; 2) Maryland back to the ACC; 3) Virginia Tech to the SEC. This would fix everything.

Feels like we've always been SEC. Beating Bama that first year settled it for me. Once we had the elation of a conference win over Bama, it felt like we were here to stay. Been some underwhelming times since then, but I never get confused and think Big 12.

Beat 'bama 2012. Don't care.

I loved and miss the Big-8. The Big-12 could have been even better but Texas (one of the schools the old Big-8 rescued when the SWC fell apart) ruined it for everyone.

I think this is the most prevailing idea. Texas ruined the greatness of the Big8 with their greed. Didn't care about the other 3 (baylor, ttech, a&m)...although, I think all the Big 8 folks were confused by how A&M thought of themselves. Never seen a little brother who insists they aren't little brother more.

quote:

Culturally I think Mizzou is more Big-10 than SEC but when you talk athletics (not just football, but hoops and baseball as well), there's no comparison

Definitely more Big-10 culturally. I say that as someone who attended Mizzou & Wisco. There are some elements of Southern culture, but I'd give it a 80-20 split in terms of Midwest-Southern mix (albeit: mostly excluding the bootheel).

Not sure what you mean by athletics being no comparison, except in baseball. Football, Mizzou is definitely more Big10. From attire, to tailgating, to gameday experience. Baseball, definitely right, no comparison. But we, like the Big10, don't care about college baseball. Byproduct of 2 instate pro teams and culture I think. Basketball is hard to nail down in terms of culture. But Big10 cares more about bball, as does Mizzou.

quote:

The energy at SEC games is off the hook too. I've been to games at the Big House in Ann Arbor and was amazed by how subdued a crowd 110,000 can be. In contrast, any number of SEC games during the regular season could pass for a Super Bowl (LSU-Bama night games in Death Valley come to mind).

It is a very different energy. In Big10, bands and non game related cheers are a large part of the experience, no so much in SEC. Don't exactly know how to describe it, but is different for sure.

quote:

Oh and on top of that we're treated as full fledged members with equal revenue distribution.

Mizzou could not have done any better than to end up in the SEC.

I mean, Big12 was a sinking ship. Got a good deal with equal partnership right off the bat. Culturally and fit-wise, Big10 would be much more natural. It has been tough without our natural rivals and Big8 foes. The distance thing still plays a big role, whether people want to believe it or not.

quote:

I just wish some of the haters would back off a little

I think this is unsurprising. 1. Culture is different. Lots of people are resistant to change, or something new. 2. Our 2 big sports were much different performance-wise than we were known as, which threw people off I think. Mizzou is without doubt, a basketball school. We just happened to be in the worst stretch (not hyperbole there) in program history. Football, I think they expected us to be a doormat program...as our success has mostly been recent. We make 2 SECCG in first 3 years, and it throws them off. Easy to see why some programs might be jealous and/or feel threatened by that. Some haven't been there, and others see us as a threat to their standing.

I just hate when some of our fans try to "be SEC", when that isn't what we are culturally. Be Missouri, thats who we are.

M-I-Z! S-E-C!

Not weird at all. We belong and we'll keep showin' ya. And if you want to talk about yankees, I give you the state of Florida. And SC is getting to be about the same.

The old Big-8 was purdy cool back in the day.

I gotta admit I really do enjoy that. Especially the okies for some reason, and I never really had a problem with their fans
