You have to be able to work and communicate with kids and he just can't do it.

Prior to the transfer portal, you could have the HC be an angry old guy who yelled all the time to maintain discipline and order and let the assistants do the hands on teaching. Now, everyone better be a teacher first. Because the players are not scared of the angry guy anymore, and he therefore serves no purpose in their minds if he isn't also a great teacher who makes them better.

Look at the way NFL coaching has evolved towards the HC being the scheme guru and QB developer first.
