Georgia has fallen a good bit overall. Several programs that had been very very good are not so much anymore. Womens BB, Gymnastics, Golf, Tennis all used to be some fo the best in the country. While still ok, we are not nearly what we once were.
Shoot, I can remember when the SEC dominated women's basketball. Out of the top 10 schools it was 7-8 SEC schools, UConn and I believe Ole Dominion? Something like that. Sports programs as a whole have slipped a bit over the years. I think academics have gotten a touch better, though. Florida, Texas A&M and Georgia are all getting respected.

Big difference in Top Ten University and Top Ten Public University. He said Public University. They are probably in the discussion with 6-7 other schools for the 8-10 spot.
For sure Top 10
- Cal
- Virginia
- UCLA
- North Carolina
- Michigan
- Georgia Tech
Then you get into the various UC system schools, Florida, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Georgia, Texas.
He's not making an outlandish statement by saying that.

I think Georgia Tech would disagree

Actually isn't stretching it and you have the order wrong.
The reference was public school rankings.Vandy isn't
Yes I am aware Vandy is private. I was correcting him putting aTm above UGA.
As for Public vs Private rankings. The order stays the same figured I would include Vandy. Hence why I said "all universities" in the sentence. It shows a lot how much both UF and UGA have climbed(not just vs public) since I went to college in the early 90's.
Forbes actually has UF as 15(80 of all) public and GTech 16th(81st over all).

UGA was just ranked the #16 public univ in the country. UF was #9. TAMU was #25
That’s not a very good ranking, no offense. CWUR has Texas A&M and Florida within spitting distance of each other. Georgia is a bit behind and Mizzou a bit behind Georgia.
Vanderbilt, of course, leads the pack. But they aren’t a public school which was the point of discussion in the OP.

Never seen any ranking that shows AM above UGA.

As someone who used to work in higher education, I am aware that UF has a long history of being one of the top public schools in the nation. It has flirted with top 10 for a long time, and occasionally is ranked there. The Chronicle for Higher Education used to publish the various rankings annually, but stopped for some reason. UF is definitely one of the top 10 public research institutions in the nation. No doubt about that. But, overall University, it probably is in the top 10 in some categories and top 20 in others. Regardless, it is pretty darned amazing that a school can have one of the top athletic programs in the country and also be a top school academically. UF is in that small elite group, and I am not sure any other SEC school can say that.

There is a pretty strong correlation between state population and academic ranking of flagship public schools and their other large state colleges. Not just current population, but over the last 50 or so years.
One big exception to that is in the northeast where there are a large number of very prestigious private schools. All the Ivy League, MIT, NYU, Carnegie Mellon, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown (if you consider DC the northeast), etc.

Based on arbitrary measures like class size, peer opinion and other methodologies they (US News) use.
A&M has higher ranked programs, graduates and is the better all around school academically.

A&M has fallen recently with its growth, but it's still an elite school when it comes to ag, all types of engineering, vet, and is strong in business and a few other select areas as well.

USNWR is all over the place but CWUR is more ridiculous.
FWIW, all this talk of Mizzou...
They're ranked below Auburn, Tennessee, SCAR and Alabama in the latest USNWR.

concur, the methodology from some of these sources is weighted in a manner that most higher education administrators would roll an eye to, but it does give a decent barometer.
To the point, aside from Vandy, Florida is the clear leader among public schools in the SEC.
