Could you or someone else fill me in about what happened after Coach Leach tragically passed away? Why was there such a collapse?
Speaking as a complete outsider, while Leach wasn't a spring chicken, he seemed to be in good health for a 61 year old and he was happy at State. Everyone expected him to coach at least another 4 years (from what I hear Leach was smart with his money so he could have walked away whenever he wanted too) before retiring and possibly longer.
State did not have a replacement plan in place because... why would you need one in that situation? So when he tragically passed away they were completely caught off guard. The closest comparison I can make is Arkansas in the post Petrino era. The last thing on our mind was bringing in a new HC.
Add to that State has some advantages... and a lot of disadvantages. There is good talent available, but lots of fishing poles in that pond. Ole Miss will flash the cash, Southern Miss, while they suck now, is good to hoover up a lot of second tier players and potentially a hidden gem or two. They are also like Arkansas and Kentucky in that the favored sport isn't football for the boosters.
To frame it in Texas terms, lets say that in 1969 Darrell Royal suddenly dies. Despite the wealth and talent that Texas can offer it would have sent the program into a tailspin.

However, by and large State fans IRL are a miserable bunch who can’t shut up if Ole Miss stubs its toe, and run to the NCAA if Ole Miss buys a recruit a hamburger.
Normal rivalry stuff. You can never trust a rival to give an honest impression of a team's fans. They see the very worst.
A concept Texas fans don't understand. They somehow think the OU fans that they see are the same as what everyone else sees. But they aren't the brightest. They don't even understand three way ties.

I just think about Mike Leach and it makes me sad. Such a good guy and such a great coach and innovator. He belongs in hall of fame

To complicate matters, they get a similar schedule next season too
At least next season they get the best home schedule ever

Well, this Texas fan grew up in the Panhandle with contact with lots of OU and UA fans. Good people.
Some people take the rivalry outside of the stadium, but I don't. It should all be in good fun. At the end of the day, we're still countrymen at the very least.

BS. OM committed 21 major infractions for that probation, and many of the infractions had multiple instances within each. Including using a woman to cheat for OM recruits on the ACT exam. Recruits from all over would take their ACT in one small town in Mississippi.
Just ONE infraction of the 21 majors was related to the player who went to State, and that was three years into OM's investigation. So it wasn't State that got OM on probation.
I also see OM fans are still going with "player slept on a coach's couch", ignoring the major infractions committed.
P.S. All of OM's infractions then would still be illegal/against NCAA rules, even with NIL. Not that the NCAA will do anything, so they and everyone else might as well now.

Not sure of that. South Carolina once lost 22 in a row

Yep, and even worse, we didn't have an athletic director when Leach died. So any coaching candidate would not know who his boss would be.

State is in as bad of position as any SEC team, ever
Right where they belong. SC and Mizzou should join soon.

It’s easy to see the worst when they act the worst.

A State fan, folks.

Usce is fantastically terrible given the appearance of their resources, I say appearance bc from an outsider perspective it appears they check all the boxes, big arse stadium, recruit in the top 25 every year, big devout alumni base. The only other team that checks these boxes and doesn’t have a title since the bcs is aTm Penn state and ND.

After Mullen, Moorhead coached 26 games. When Shrader had his orbital bone broken by Willy Gay, I was ready to move on from Moorhead. Coach Leach coached 36 games but I don’t believe he was ever known for being a great recruiter. Then when he tragically passed, we promote Arnett. I would have preferred keeping him at DC and someone else be head coach, but how many coaches coming in to replace Leach would’ve brought a new coordinator with them? So we’ve gone through several coaches in a very short period of time, and the recruiting has had a huge effect on the end result. For several years we had linemen and db’s that went on to the NFL. Our roster is far removed from those days. Revolving door of coaches and sub-par recruiting will cause that.

You can't have the coordinators and head coaches all learning on the job in this conference.
I understand your frustration but there’s only so many of these assistant coaching jobs in the country. The SEC certainly is not a conference for coaches to learn on the job but when the pickings are small, that what happens. At least you aren’t a Purdue or N’Western or somewhere like that. Those coaches they get are MAC level coaches and if by chance they are successful, they jump at the drop of a hat to go to a school with more resources. Mullen had y’all relevant again. What is the likelihood he’d come back from the studio and rehash the good old days?
