Spurrier Unlocked: Saban is a Great Recruiter, Not a Great Coach

Have Spurrier's shots at Saban's recruiting rankings and his need to overwork stemmed from his belief that Saban needed a school like Alabama where he could out recruit everyone to mask his deficiencies as a coach? Spurrier even went so far today as to name Gus Malzahn as one of the "great" SEC coaches while declining to give Saban the same designation.
When you think about the 2010 Iron Bowl, 2011 Bama vs LSU, and 2013 Iron Bowl, all three games exemplify when Saban was unable to out-talent the opponent and his coaching abilities failed to close out the game. When Saban is unable to out-talent opponents, does he fall apart?

Then again, recruiting is part of the game, and that's one reason Nick Saban's teams are rarely out-talented by other teams.

Interesting thoughts, but I give this a snowball's chance in hell of becoming a reasonable discussion on here.
It's not like he was Mr. America at MSU or did anything worht a shite in Miami. Those two teams don't have a recruiting base like LSU and Bama.

Talent beats coaching in college nine times out of 10. Or 11/12 out of 13/14 for Bama.

Saban has long been guilty of getting a lead and sitting on it, letting far inferior teams hang around by going conservative actually somewhat similar to miles in that aspect

Every coach has their own strategy to win and overcome deficiencies. I don't think Saban is an elite or even excellent gameday coach. However, he overcomes this by being the best recruiter and program manager in the nation.
Spurrier is the opposite. Elite gameday coach, but lazy recruiter. Kind of like Petrino at Arkansas.

Does anyone that is knowledgeable about football really think saban is a great coach?

A great coach wins. Period. Saban wins more than anyone. Ergo Saban is a great coach. Spurrier (and I guess you) come across as childish here trying to downplay Saban's status as one of the great coaches.

Think about when Saban and Tuberville were playing each other at LSU and Auburn respectively. Tub's thought (and probably still thinks) he was better than Saban and his players bought in. Gus has brought that belief back to Auburn and the end result was a very evenly matched Iron Bowl.
Coaches and teams that are intimidated by the Bama mystique will get destroyed but if you play Bama mano y mano you'll win everytime. They're essentially bullies who crumble when someone stands up to them

Saban is absolutely a great coach. Recruiting IS an aspect of coaching after all.
