Spurrier only had one measly national championship.

And he is commonly considered to be on the Mount Rushmore of SEC football coaches? I don't think so. And let's not forget the cowardly way he left South Carolina.

And all this time I thought he had 3 or 4...

He also inherited a program that was almost irrelevant before him

For some reason this picture seems relevant to this thread.

SEC Champs in '42. Must have been a pretty good team.

He also turned South Carolina football into a winner. That’s an incredible feat.

He won 11 games in 3 consecutive seasons at South Carolina. Nobody in their right mind (myself included) thought that would ever happen in Columbia.

Dooley had just as many national championships and SEC Championships as Spurrier. Sounds like they are equal to me.

So he is one of the greatest SEC coaches of all time for that?

For his career accomplishments, yes, he is up there.

So did Mike Leach's offense. Yet he isn't considered one of the greatest coaches of all time.

Funny how UGA fans forget… Spurrier kicked off a span where UGA won about once every decade for a couple decades.

He changed the game.
He said things other coaches lacked the courage to say.
He made USC relevant.
He had a winning record at Duke.

But mostly we liked him because he kept UGA fans humble, after claiming their yearly August national championships for so long.

Moron, nobody is saying he isn’t a good coach. My beef is with the fact that people want to compare him to the Bryants and Sabans of the world. When Kirby retires, he will have a much more impressive resume than Spurrier. Dooley is on par with him now.

He also had a bunch of top 5 finishes. His Florida teams were always dangerous, and we’ve seen what SEC teams can do in the playoffs.

The majority of his Florida tenure predated even the BCS. I’d wager he would have had another title if he coached in the playoff era.
