Spurrier: I don't understand praise for Saban having success with coaching turnover

Spurrier actually has more wins against Saban than all the current SEC coaches combined. He has plenty of respect for Saban, and what he has done at Alabama, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to gush over one of his old rivals.

How does Saban avoid a fall off with so much turnover on his coaching staff?

“The recruiting is good, very good, and there are good coaches everywhere,” Spurrier said. “The seven SECs we won sort of in the 90s, we had five different defensive coordinators. So, sometimes those coordinators are not as important as everyone thinks, maybe.”

I mean, he's right in that the head guy makes more of a difference than coordinators, but he seems a little jealous and bitter that he never had the work ethic to recruit as well as Saban - thus couldn't keep up once elite recruiters entered into SEC country.

Wouldn't the idea of winning despite coaching turnover be more of a nod to Saban?

that's a typical shite piece from al.com trying to make something out of nothing

if it was actually supposed to be an insult, the writer would have included the entire back and forth for context

instead, he puts quotes JUST from Spurrier

And Hugh Freeze has the same amount. (as coaches that are currently coaching in the conference)

That otherwise the fact that Saban had 30 "analyst" helping out with recruiting and OBC had zero.

Saban proved he could win at a program like LSU.

Spurrier tried that with South Carolina but never succeeded, so I can see how he's a bit jealous.

Nah, it started well before Saban had that many "analysts". Saban entered the SEC in 2000, Spurrier leaves Florida in 2001. Spurrier re-enters the SEC in 2005 and never achieves the same success - because the culture and climate of recruiting had changed in the SEC. Saban provided the blueprint while at LSU for all programs to follow. Improve infrastructure and focus on recruiting and the results will follow. Spurriers problem with that? He never had the work ethic to be a relentless recruiter, so he couldn't sustain success in the "new SEC".

It was supposed to be a dig at the Corn Dogs, but... the way Spurrier left USC is pretty much the way my respect left for him.

negative ghost rider. Spurrier went 2-0 against Saban when Saban was at LSU and Spurrier at Florida. He went 1-1 against Saban when Saban was at Alabama and he at USC. Hugh Freeze does not have 3 career wins over Saban. The only coaches that do are Les Miles, Steve Spurrier, Lloyd Carr, and Joe Paterno.

Saban is a better coach than Spurrier, but this is a poor example as to why.
