Spurrier discusses the current beef with ex-players.

There was a thread a couple days ago about some former SC players being upset about Spurrier not letting them in the weight room because they didn't attend a dinner they were expected to. Spurrier has finally answered questions about the issue.

So is Spurrier in the right or wrong? Quite frankly I think that just depends on if the players had agreed to go or not.
If they were invited but never actually agreed to attend (but perhaps it was expected of them to go?) then Spurrier does come off as rather bitter.
If they were invited and told Spurrier and Pastides they were coming then I don't blame Spurrier for being mad. Make a commitment? You're expected to keep it.

Steve Spurrier spoke publicly for the first time on Saturday about a dispute reportedly with former safety D.J. Swearinger and other South Carolina players that briefly played out on Twitter earlier this week.
According to Spurrier, Swearinger was one of 12 former players (tight end Justice Cunningham was also involved) that failed to show up for a cookout and reception at the house of school president Dr. Harris Pastides on the Horseshoe following Pro Timing Day on March 27.
Bitterly disappointed at the poor turnout, Spurrier informed the guilty players that they were not allowed to work out at USC's weight room inside the Crews facility until they wrote a letter of apology to Pastides.
Spurrier characterized the episode as "embarrassing."
"If they've done what they've supposed to do, they can come back in the weight room," Spurrier said following an hour-long scrimmage under sunny skies at Williams-Brice Stadium.
"We had a reception at the President's house and we thought everybody was going. About 12 of our senior guys decided they didn't want to go," Spurrier continued. "It was a little embarrassing for me. As soon as they write a letter of apology to the president, they can come back to the weight room. If they don't think it's important, they don't need to come to the weight room. Pretty simple."
Spurrier said "several" of the former players have already sent letters of apology to Pastides for failing to appear at the reception.
"A lot of them are still out of town. Hopefully, they'll all do it and we'll all be happy again," Spurrier said. "But it was a bad thing that happened a week or so ago."

I say he's in the right because all he's making them do is write a letter of apology. If they don't think it's necessary for them to write a simple letter to someone that was expecting them then they must not want to work out too bad. It's not like he's kicking them out entirely.

I trust the old mans judgement.

They're no longer part of the team. They gave them their 4 years and owe nothing to Spurrier or SC at this point. That being said SC also doesn't have to allow them in the weight room anymore either.
They could have shown up though. Even if it was just for a few minutes. Sounds like the dinner was for them (the Seniors) anyway. Kind of douchey not to show up.

Now the president has to read forced, not sincere "apology"
letters. Guy cant catch a break.

Spurrier absolutely in the right here. He just gained some respect from me.

Let's hope we're still letting the guys use our tutors before they do.

He's in the right. It sounds to me the players committed to Spurrier to be there otherwise he most likely wouldn't have said he was expecting them to show. Cocks have no loyalty anyway.

This is why I love SOS. He is a straight shooter and will tell it like it is. Of course they said that they were coming then they didn't show up. I'd probably kicked them out of the weight room forever but it's a great idea to have them write apologies. Who cares if the president finds out. He too understands the meaning of discipline. Guys act like children they need to be punished like children. Probably should have them write it 1,000 times on a chalkboard too...

Spurrier probably told the president those guys were going to be there, and when they didn't show up he looks like an arse

Spurrier sounds right to me. Those players should show USC and the athletic department some respect for letting them play college ball and giving them an education. If they were expected to go and blew it off then they seem unappreciative.

Yeah Swearinger's tweet that sent this into the public eye came off as very "I gave USC everything I had and am getting nothing in return"
It sucks though, hope we can get a better report with him again soon. He was a fan favorite and will probably be the highest 'Cock drafted this year. Good shot at being in the 1st around because he has apparently had a really good pro-day and combine.
Oh yeah and he gave the Gamecock fans this lasting memory.

This shouldn't even be an issue; Head Ball Coach has 50 years of playing and coaching behind him and a reputation for doing things the right way. Those guys made a commitment and broke it. Now they need to man up, apologize to all, and put this silly incident behind them. So Silly.

I mean, yeah they "served time" for the university but if you can't make a dinner for the coach don't get butthurt when you can't use his gym. It's not like he's asking them to spend 10 hours signing autographs.
Hell, shaq comes down just to be SEEN at a restaurant for a recruit,

It was a dinner hosted by the president of the university. You fricking show up. If you have plans, you change them. fricking sense of entitlement with a lot of these players today. Spurrier should have told the players to write the letter of apology and then, one day, maybe, he'll let them in the weight room again.

Exactly. Why bite the hand that feeds? Ungrateful fricks are what they are.
