Brian Kelly had Notre Dame playing way above their talent level, so they ended up in some bowls they had no business being in.
They also seem to be perpetually overrated just due to the Notre Dame brand.

He lost to Oklahoma state.
Not every bowl loss is against saban.

How would Tennessee/Arkansas/Florida have been under Gundy if he would have taken those jobs?

How would you fix it?

He would have done very well at all three places.
When Petrino got fired, I wanted Gundy because he knew how to win with what he had and didn't waste talent.
But Arkansas ended up with Bert and that was a huge mistake.

quote:No, he didn't, but even if he had- it's not like Notre Dame had talent that outclassed Okie State. They're not scrubs, not Vandy; but they also weren't at Ohio State levels.quote:

And yet, he did coach them to a lot of regular season wins, such as at Oklahoma a few years back. Beat LSU in a bowl (or 2)... beat some other teams too. Played, and lost, to UGA a couple seasons in a row; and the second game, AT UGA, was more competitive. Beat (a weakened) Clemson in the regular season a couple years ago.
These were games they really should have been stomped, just by comparing the guys on the field. He made it close, and won some he shouldn't have.
That's with the Notre Dame recruits, figuratively one hand tied behind his back. He's at LSU now, which we can acknowledge CAN produce a whole different level of player. Let's see what he can do, when he fills the roster, and he doesn't have to figure how to keep it close against a superior team, but instead has the advantage in talent.
He isn't some young hot kid, he is experienced and has a successful system that overcomes a good bit. Like people have said, he's wanting to see what he can do with top-tier talent.

As much as it pains me you can objectively argue that Kirby is #1.

Still riding his championship from FSU and being the first of Sabans assistants to beat the boss

Ok. But how long does this last ? He’s objectively horrible as a coach. Especially with so many better guys behind him.

Does he get any credit for being one of the main reasons Anthony Richardson was drafted top 5?

Why? Who behind him has accomplished more? I’ll wait.

Who would you put higher than him?
Looking at the options I don’t see a clear cut answer. I think 6 is right on for Kelly.
These things always are tough to quantify as it can be "better resume", "better expectations" or some combination of the two.
In terms of resume, Lincoln Riley, Sonny Dykes, Mack Brown and Jimbo Fisher have all easily accomplished more.
In terms of mid-term expectations (next 5 years), I would put guys like Dan Lanning, Josh Heupel, Kyle Whittingham and Luke Fickell ahead of him.

Seriously?
Mack Brown and Jimbo Fisher have won national championships.
Lincoln Riley has more conference championships and playoff appearances.
Sonny Dykes has won a playoff game.
All have accomplished more on the field than Kelly.

How is Jimbo Fisher in the top 50?
Count how many head coaches on that list actually have a NC. It could easily be argued that he should be above Brian Kelly. Particularly after their last meeting.

Yeahhh and then you could poll 50 athletic directors on if they would rather have Kelly or Jimbo leading their program and you would get 50 quick answers.
