It's not like the SC coaches were making a mistake sitting him the whole time.
Jake Coker at Alabama had a similar experience in college. Backed up 3 first round drafted QBs at FSU before grad transferring to Bama, sitting a year and winning a NC.

Jarrett Lee was scared to death of Alabama. In 4 appearances against the tide he had 24 completions and 7 interceptions. Putting him into the game on 1/9/12 would’ve resulted in the game getting way out of hand.
