Arkansas claims 1964
Alabama claims 1964

Truly, no biggie. Both were recognized national champions by legit places. Its part of the deal when dealing with national champions prior to the BCS and playoff. It is what it is.

Yeah like OSU was more deserving in 1957 because they played in a bowl game while AU was probation and didn't.

Yea, unfortunately for them they lost and blew their chance.

1950 Tennessee

1950 Kentucky (11-1) defeated #1 Oklahoma (10-1) in the Sugar Bowl which took Kentucky over Tennessee (11-1) because Coach Bryant guaranteed them that he would beat Oklahoma.

Kentucky played FOUR non-1A teams in 1950 and lost to the only 1A team (Tennessee) they played with a winning record. I don't know why in hell Coach Bryant thought he could beat Oklahoma. And then did it!

When there was clearly another more deserving team. We've already been through this.

Right so you agree that OSU is the true national champion of 1957 and not auburn and that Bama is the true national champion of 1966. Glad we can agree on things

OSU won their bowl game. AU didnt play in one. OSU = 1957 national champs. Ridiculous to claim a national title when you are on probation and cant play in a bowl game.

BAMA claims the '64 championship along with several others because they were awarded before the bowl season even began. AP and UPI held this practice for years.
As an alumnus of UA, I call bullshite on the '41 claim!! I don't like the idea of 9-2 and not winning the conference but then have some system retroactively claim you were the champion.
For years, you had split champions AP and UPI all the way up until the '91 champ if I'm not mistaken.

21-0 and 6 straight have really messed you Corndogs up though!!

I just noticed that LSU is claiming the 2011 SEC Championship when they got slaughtered, shut out, in their bowl game against the true SEC champion.

Why doesn't LSU do the decent thing and give up that fake championship claim?

The best part of the 1964 story is that they changed the rule after it happened and awarded the title AFTER the bowl game for 1965.

Then in 1965, Arkansas goes into the bowls undefeated, loses, and Bama jumps from 4th to 1st to win another title.

Amazing how much of Alabama's history would be wiped away were it dependent upon on-field performance and not some subjective popularity contest from groups of fallible people who can be bought and influenced.

1964 is pretty cut and dry:

1. Arkansas was the most deserving of the National Title that year, without a doubt.

2. Alabama IS the true national champion despite not being deserving of it. They have both the AP and the UPI trophies in their case. Of course they will claim that.

It sucks for Hogs fans, but the facts remain they did not win the National Title in 1964. They were the unfortunate beneficiaries of a failed system that the AP corrected the very next year in response to the travesty. Unfortunately for the UPI, it would take them rewarding Bama with another undeserved title in the early 1970s before they finally corrected their system of naming the champion.

Just curious, do you have a link to the article that accompanies that headline?

They would have 2 of their 11 National Champions wiped off the books.... yet they would still have the most Championships of any program.

I disagree with their share of the 1978 Title, considering USC beat them head-to-head at Legion Field. However, they were awarded the trophy at the end of the year, so it is what it is.

The problem is the goal posts are always moving with this argument. Want to exclude anything prior to the poll era? Fine. But anything between 1936-1991 has to be a major poll correct? The bowl coalition and bowl alliance between 1991-1997. The BCS from 1998-2013. The CFP from 2014-present.

This is how I see it.

There are a bunch of bogus Championships out there that simply aren't legit.

Alabama's 1941 claim is probably the most egregious. They finished 9-2 and #20 in the AP.

Tennessee counts about 4 titles that are completely bogus.

Of course Ole Miss's claim of 3 titles is a complete joke. They have zero.

And as unfortunate as it is, Arkansas' 1964 title is not legit. No one outside of Fayetteville recognizes it.

1941
1964
1965
1973
1978
2011

None of these would exist without "help" from some very generous off-field "support".

All of these teams were voted into statuses and opportunities their on-field merits didn't warrant.

But like Arkansas they won the FWAA championship that year.... but unlike Arkansas they won the Coaches title also that year (1957, AU won AP with no bowl; OSU won Coaches & FWAA & beat Oregon in the Rose Bowl that year.

With the exception of '41, these are all poll titles. They are given to the team that finished 1st in a poll. Voters are polled for their opinions on the top teams, those votes are compiled into a poll, and the top team in the poll gets the trophy. That's the point of a poll. Don't agree with the poll? Tough shite.

Trust me, no one is arguing the fallacy of polls, and how it provided you much of your underserved history.

We're all just glad that now we have a playoff and things are finally settled on the field.

Those unfortunate years listed were examples of why the play-off was so long overdue.
