1930 - Alabama finished the regular season going 9-0 against a schedule that included LSU, Ole Miss , and ever current SEC East team except Missouri and South Carolina outscoring it's opponents 242-13 in the process. Alabama went on to defeat Washington State 24-0 in the Rose Bowl.
1930 Notre Dame finished the regular season going 10-0 outscoring opponents 271-74 in the process. Notre Dame defeated USC 27-0 in its last regular season game. The same USC team that lost to Washington State...Alabama's Rose Bowl opponent...earlier that season.
Notre Dame has a completely valid claim that season because they were awarded the title in the majority of polls that year but it's important to keep in mind that most polls awarded the national championship at the end of the regular season when Notre Dame was 10-0 and had just defeated USC 27-0 but before Alabama smoked the same Washington State that beat USC earlier that season 24-0 in the Rose Bowl.

UGA claims 1942. They did not win the national championship in 1942. Ohio State won the AP that year.
The AP was in its infancy and didn't garner its prestige until many years later....there were over a dozen polls authorized by the NCAA and UGA won the overwhelming consensus number of them.
Ohio State finished 9-1 and did not go to a bowl game. Georgia finished 11-1, crushed Florida 75-0 and thrashed the #2 team in the nation (Georgia Tech) in the final game of the season and whipped UCLA 9-0 in the Rose Bowl. OSU played unranked Iowa Pre-Flight in its final regular season game and, again, did not go to a bowl game.
UGA should claim 1942 and they do. Ohio State has the same right to claim '42 if they want--and they do.

1941 is the only egregious one. The other ones are as legit as any of the other titles from around that time. If they’re dubious because they’re shared or because they crowned a national champion before the bowl games in those days, then a lot of school’s pre-1990s titles are also up for debate.
In my mind, we didn’t get real national champions until the 1990s, and if you went undefeated or had one loss in a season with no undefeated teams, won the SEC, were generally dominant, and won your bowl (or were awarded before the bowl, which was common in the days when bowl games were seen as just holiday exhibitions), then that’s fine.
Schools that claim titles in the BCS/CFP era but didn’t win the national championship game are kidding themselves, though (looking at you 2017 UCF and 2003 USC).

Really doesn't matter. Bama usually has more in whatever poll you want to count. What do you want to count as official national championships?
AP?
Coaches, UPI, AFCA, etc.?
NFF MacArthur Bowl (1959-present)
FWAA Grantland Rice (1954-2014 (merged with NFF) (this is Ark's claim)
BCS (1998-2013)
College Football Playoff (2014-present) (Not Updated for 2022)
Chicken's poll (even the mighty Chicken has Bama with a lot)

You should look up exactly why Ohio State didn't go to a bowl. You can do it!

You are delusional.
1964 - AP and UPI. No debate. No matter what happened, Alabama has the hardware.
1965 - MSU, Arky, Nebraska LOST bowl. This was the first year where the AP was awarded after the bowl. Bama won their bowl, wins AP.
1973 - UPI still selected before bowl. Alabama is 11-0-0 pre-bowl national champion.
1978 - OU and Penn State lost late. Alabama lost early. USC lost later. Alabama had time to recover and therefore won a share.

Pedo St was undefeated in 1978, Bryant talked Paterno into playing in the Sugar Bowl so it would be AP #1 vs AP #2.
Also, the Orange Bowl was an OU/Nebraska rematch that season since both were co Big 8 champs. Huskers won the regular season game, Sooners got payback in Miami.

I am no Bama fan but the '66 fiasco led Bear to say he hoped the boys in Vietnam weren't playing for a tie, referring to I think Michigan State and N. D.
He was right, Bama should have been crowned champs that year at least.
Screw N. D., any team from Michigan, and Bama.

The tell Notre Dame, USC,.....GEORGIA...that those Rose Bowl titles, which were the national championship game back then, that they have WAY less than they claim. Go tell Notre Dame that they have 66, 73, 77 and 88.
You will be told to F off. If it's only since the poll era so be it. Bama still owns college football since the poll era began. Count UGA's titles since the poll era. You have nowhere even close to 8.

Early on, I added them with the explanation that all 8 were claimed in the same manner as Bama claimed them. If they can claim them, so can "I"
If Alabama claimed titles the way Alabama claims titles, Alabama could claim 32 titles!

Anything you say is moot, simply based on the most recognized selectors of the era. All that matters is where the hardware resides. These aren’t claimed titles. These are titles that were voted on. If you don’t like it, then go to Tuscaloosa and tell them.

Cool. Alabama still has more than everyone else without those.
