Very profound quote and one that's true. Many talented players are sabotaging themselves in this new era. A little taste of money is allowing them to lose their work ethic and commitment.
The issue isn't with players who go on to get drafted. It's the guys who could have developed into something great but instead transferred and faded into irrelevance.

Really? Who? What's the data on that? You're saying NBA scouts are missing on players in college who maximize their earnings by transferring? I don't believe that for a second
No, Dummy... if you transfer every semester you never graduate...

we aren't all Shaq, Shaq. 90% of these players' highest prospects is role-player in Greece. of course they're going to optimize for max earnings now.
Right, well players dont have to get everything they want. The fans, that pay the actual salaries, determine what the players get. Keep dumping on the fans and see how long the crazy train lasts

Ah yes. Just go to whatever situation gives you a pay bump. Don’t look for culture fit, who will develop you the best, or who has the best long term potential for success. Just “who is gonna throw me the most racks.”
Any time I have a role open up, I have at least 100 applicants whose resumes indicate this shortsighted approach has been their strategy throughout their professional career. Serial job hoppers just ping ponging to a different company every year chasing a slight bump in salary.
No thanks.

That's your prerogative as the employer, and it is rational. But fans aren't packing arenas to watch these kids review mortgage applications.

You guys who think players who transfer are some how “marked” negatively by the pros are hilarious. The #1 QB in the draft this year was a transfer. Travis Hunter who is a generational player was a transfer. Ewers and Sanders were transfers and will be high picks.
You are mentioning players who were smart and ended up at schools that would enhance their visibility and their brand. Travis Hunter and Shadeur Sanders weren't going to get noticed by NFL scouts at Jackson State. When Deion got the Colorado job they left with him because it would provide them more exposure. Guess what. They were right. The same thing goes for Cam Ward from Washington State to Miami, Bo Nix from Auburn to Oregon, and Quinn Ewers from Ohio State to Texas.
However, you are talking about a tiny minority of players who end up succeeding off the transfer portal. There are many more T.J. Finleys of the college football world than there are Cam Wards.

"Want" has nothing to do with it. they get what the market will pay them.
Shaq's an out-of-touch boomer who doesn't want the kids he's paying to leave after one year. there's an easy way to ensure they don't. Pay them more than someone else will.
This "some poor kid is going to lose his spot on NBA roster because he got paid in college" FUD is nothing more than an attempt to suppress the market, so Shaq doesn't have to open his wallet as much.
Also, no one's forcing Shaq to pay anything. He doesn't have the play this game. In fact, if he really believes what he says, he shouldn't.
All these posters downvoting me have left jobs for more money. Tell me how that's any different from what these kids are doing?

The kids take most of the money upfront

Shaq is the market. People like him write the checks. The market is also very fluid, what players get now is not necessarily what theyll get 5 years from now

it's funny you say this, because Shaq is a genetic lottery winner who is lecturing to others that they should play the lottery instead of just putting their money into the S&P 500.
Worked hard, got his degree and refuses to use his hard earned $ for grifters looking for a bag

a non-graduating bag chaser who starts the compound interest clock with $750K will make far more over his lifetime than the player who graduates with a General Studies degree who starts with $250K.
for the typical player, it is an absolute no-brainer to chase the bag, even if it means not getting a degree.

Feel the same. My dollars will stop going to school if this doesn’t get fixed soon.
Will just buy tickets whenever I want to go.
Cost me 20% more for “football” this upcoming year. In part, to pay for the rent a player program.

So you signed up to a college sports website 3 years after you quit watching college sports, then today, five years later, you are still reading and keeping up with college sports on this website, although you stopped watching it in 2020.

Bradley Beal said the same thing about doing NIL for UF (obviously he doesn't have near the money Shaq does but still). Which is ironic since Beal was a one and done.

You can get a Degree with a capital D or a degree with a lower case d. EVERYONE KNOWS THE DIFFERENCE. There are a lot of people these days with a degree with no value that has the lower case d. If you get one with the upper case D which actually has value, you will be fine.
You do grasp there is a big difference and it is 100% on the athlete whether he gets the one with the upper or lower case d.
Pretending like a general studies degree is the same as an engineering, finance or accounting degree is laughable.

Is Shaq actually giving money?
And how is LSU supposed to make guys stay for 2-3 years? Look at what happened with UTenn and Nico. These athletes don't have to honor their contracts. So what is LSU or any school supposed to do when they want to leave?
Also after the Russell Terry experiment, I don't care for athletes making too many decisions.
