The SEC and ESPN plan to formally announce the creation of an SEC channel on Tuesday. The two parties have begun to reach out to key constituents to let them know about the 12:00pm ET announcement at the Atlanta Hyatt. University presidents, ADs, SEC Commissioner Mike Slive, ESPN execs and the conference's corporate sponsors are among those being invited to the news conference. The SEC and ESPN have been working on plans to form a channel since the fall of '11, and the new channel is expected to launch in August '14.
The channel is expected to have its studio headquarters in Charlotte at the ESPN Regional Television offices, while the primary sales outlet will be based in Atlanta.

Will viewers have to subscribe to this channel or will it be included on regular cable, like ESPN/ESPN2?

Assuming ESPN will force it onto basic packages in most SEC states from the get go though its possible you may need a sports package or higher tier in some states early on.
Eventually it should be on basic in every SEC state.

I hope you're right, but I smell a premium being involved. It's all about the Benjamins these days.

I was actually kind of surprised that it will be televised out of Charlotte. I guess ESPN doesn't have a studio in the ATL area?

Yeah, but why do you think your "basic" cable package is so expensive? Because networks like ESPN can basically force cable providers to include it in their basic packages because it's so popular.
The question is do they have that swing with this channel with its limited focus. Might depend on the state.
How does the B1G channel work in those states?

Hope UVERSE carries it and is it too much to hope for a high quality HD picture?

There was a huge fight over The Big 10 network getting on basic cable here in the Midwest. I have to think the SEC channel will be the same thing all over again. There are far more people here, but more competition for viewers with all the pro sports.
Maybe we could just trade this channel for one of the televangelist networks and make everyone happy.

does ESPN have any channels that aren't high quality HD?
even the syndicated SEC Network TV stuff looks better than what you would get on a Fox Sports regional feed.
maybe a few things on ESPN3 look like arse but those are likely not even produced my the mothership and are simply purchased from small time providers.

This will cost money for every cable subscriber in the SEC states eventually.

People pay a premium for ESPN as it is now. I don't know the exact number, but it's around $1 of your cable bill. Compared to other channels, that's really high. I doubt they will make you subscribe to it specifically, the best way to get it out there for everyone to see is by including it on basic cable packages. And they'll probably get around $1 per "subscriber". This is how ESPN did the longhorn network, except one tiny difference: demand. Most states will get this channel.
