We should've been playing 9 games already, let alone before we expand to 16 teams. Give me 3-6 all day

I agree, but with a nine game conference schedule it makes sense to keep divisions. That way you alternate among divisions each year who has four home games and who has five. Odd numbered years the East has four home games, the West five and vice versa for even numbered years.

Without a round robin or divisions? Determining the conference championship participants (fairly) will be a problem. Three and four way ties for first or second place in the regular season will happen.

I don't see a way around that. 16 teams is too many for divisions and apparently the pods solution is dead.

1 - pods ARE doable & there IS A WAY to keep ALL rivalries
2 - interesting they didn't list the Kent./Louisville SEC/ACC matchup
3 - interesting they point out the problem with Fl./Ok. as perms, but list that at the bottom.

As they point out, 8 games DOESN'T create the +/- 1 game issue.

An even # would keep all HAPPY (conf. games-wise).

HOWEVER, the 4 with the SEC/ACC matchup would be AGAINST 10 conf. games (10 SEC, ACC team, only 1 open slot on the schedule).

Well, in fairness, the SEC COULD HAVE fixed scheduling with the last expansion.

You've just killed DSOR.
Replace Tn. with UGA & kill TSIO.

I forgot how, but it also messed up UGA (think now it's GT & Fl. both home or away each year).

How does a 4 Team POD protect

AUB-UGA
UGA-UF
Bama- AUB
UT-Bama

One option

Pod (fixed opponent):
Alabama (Auburn)
Tennessee (Florida)
Kentucky (Georgia)
Vanderbilt (South Carolina)

Second Pod:
Auburn
Georgia
Florida
South Carolina

IMO you make the schedule that is balanced based on historical data. If rivalries are lost they can be scheduled as ooc games. Then you find out how important those “rivalries “ really are.
Another important point is increasing the frequency of playing all conference opponents.

You would have six permanent opponents. I just left out the other two pods for the sake of simplicity. You would also play all four teams from one of the other pods for two years and then rotate to the next pod.

It would maintain almost every historical rivalry as an annual game. It also means two functional divisions every year

3 + 6 is way to go...

9 SEC Games
1 P5 Game
1 G5 Game
1 FCS Game

Your +6 should be Home/Away two straight years

I feel like those who wouldn’t be in favor of 9 games are teams that play an out of conference rival each year. Especially South Carolina, where they have a State Law that makes them play Clemson + another in-state team.
There is no such law for either of your claims.

4X4 pods
You play the 3 in your pod + 1 perm in the other 3.

Pair up pods yearly (Y1 - AB vrs. CD, Y2 - AC vrs. BD, Y3 - AD vrs. BC). Winner of each duo is SECCG team.

Ex. Team A1's schedule:
Y1 - A2, A3, A4, B1 (Pod B perm rival), B2. B3, B4, C1 (Pod C perm rival), D1 (Pod D perm rival)

Y2 - A2, A3, A4, B1 (Pod B perm rival), C1 (Pod C perm rival), C2, C3, C4, D1 (Pod D perm rival)

Y3 - A2, A3, A4, B1 (Pod B perm rival), C1 (Pod C perm rival), D1 (Pod D perm rival), D2, D3, D4

Everybody in 3, full rotation in 6.

So, in a way, it's a 6-3 format.

We already think Ala./Aub., Ga./Fl., Tn./Vandy, & Miss./MSU will be paired duos.
