Hillbilly is a compliment...to me is as much geographic as a frame of mind.

I grew up in the N Ga Mountains so hillbilly fits fine.

To me, I associate the word "redneck" with "country" culture more than anything. Blue collar, NASCAR, Bible Belt, hunting, fishing, etc.

I associate "white trash" with laziness, drug addiction, etc. "White trash" can be rednecks, but rednecks cannot be white trash. It's almost assumed you're unemployed or employed illegally if you're white trash.

I associate "hillbilly" with mountains. Gotta have a hill to have a hillbilly. Ain't none where I'm from.

Redneck was not a compliment when I was growing up. It meant you were uneducated and had to make do with manual labor.

Somewhere in the 1980s, probably right around when Smokey and the Bandit came along, it became a cooler term. City folks even started liking country music. Nashville became as cool as New York.

All very strange. Coastal liberals misappropriated the poor white man's culture for profit.

Your stupidity is on display. You can't run from it or deflect.

Your perception on human beings and their value is what shaped this, people without formal education that perform manual labor are the backbone of this nation. Your life and all our lives would fall apart without them.

I have an education, I make good money and I am “successful” but to many people from other regions and some in this one.. I’ll always be a redneck..my family background, accent, and experiences ensure that and I’m proud of all of them.

Rednecks throw their beer cans in the back of the truck. White trash throw them on the side of the road.

By the way, y'all forgot the glorious category of Coonass.

Not my perception. My family hails from the arse end of Texas where White Trash run wild. There were plenty of non-college educated folks that ran land, operated small businesses, and were all around stellar people.

There were also a very large number of trailer dwelling day laborers who spent their paychecks on Allsup's Burritos, menthol smokes, and Natty light and were generally dodging creditors, getting in fights, and rolling around town in ancient beater vehicles belching smoke.

Definitely a distinction.

I’m a redneck, I love big cities. Never been to New York, but want to one day. Atlanta, Miami, Vegas, Seattle, Denver, DC were all fun.

I lived there for three long years. I liked the thousands of great ethnic food options to choose from, and that's really the only nice thing I have to say about the place. The city is full of garbage, rats, and roaches, and the subway is about as close to lawlessness as Texas was in 1870. It's better now than it was in the 1980s, but the place has really taken a nosedive since COVID. Street crime has gotten completely out of control again thanks to idiotic laws and NYPD can't do anything to stop it. People from NYC make being obnoxious their entire personality. The culture of the place is bizarre and hellbent on materialism. I don't think there's anywhere else in the world where so many people have an obsession with owning multiple pairs of thousand dollar shoes.

I left and never looked back. People love to shite on Chicago, but most of Chicago is infinitely better than most of NYC.
