The true hillbilly country in the SEC is limited to eastern Tennessee, eastern Kentucky, northeastern Alabama, and northern Georgia. The rest is a mixture of rednecks and white trash. Rednecks and white trash are virtually the same thing, although the ones you find in Florida are a different breed that give off that energy drink & crack vibe.
There's also a contingent, albeit small, of the Vandy fanbase in Mid TN that falls in the redneck category. You can tell just by looking at the two whistlers upon first glance

If I had to pick, I'd rather be called country than a redneck. I know some take pride in being labeled as such, but many others (including myself) would take it as an insult. To most people, rednecks & white trash pretty much have the same meaning.

I don’t view redneck and whites trash the same. Redneck is a reference to the color ones neck gets from farm/outdoor labor. Nothing wrong with rural life. Calling anyone “trash” of any sort is low class and grounds for an arse kicking.
To each his own, but I’m smart enough to realize that everyone from the south is viewed as a redneck by people from other regions so I’m not going to fight about it with southern folks.

I understand your argument, and based on your definition of redneck, I would agree. What you consider redneck is what I consider country. I have always liked country people and respected their kindess, work ethic, and traditions. To me, redneck is pretty much synonymous with white trash. But again, I'm a city person. I grew up in Nashville and have spent my adult life in the cities up north.

It's a common jab, but you'd actually be surprised. I think this stereotype held more weight before the New South experienced tremendous economic growth. And there's plenty of rednecks you can find around the entire country. As soon as you get an hour north of NYC, NY State is about as backwoods as the hills of southern Appalachia.
